I was wondering how to wash a sleeping bag. I got one back from awhile ago and it smells like smoke. I looked it up online and said to use front loader only..

Also did you use detergent or just run it through the first time without anything?

Does anyone have experience with doing it in a top loading and what did you do.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Dawn B and itsalittlecrazylife4
I used vinegar and a little detergent. I also used the safety pin and it worked great.
It smells just a little but nothing like before, I think it will disipate
Thanks for everyones input, I'm not all too sure where a laundry mat is around here, if it didn't work then I was going to try that. There was plenty of room in the washer, I was surprised.

I think the best thing is to take it to a laundry mat and use one of their large capacity machines. There is plenty of room for a thorough washing.
Their dryers are large capacity too.

That's what I do with my comforters and down featherbeds too. There's no way they would fit or get clean in my washer.

Good luck!

You cannot wash it in anything that does not have the capacity for a king sized comforter. My front loader does that. If I didn't I would go to a laundromat since they have large capacity washers and dryers.

I unzip them all the way around and take them to the laundromat, warm/cold water, med/low heat.

A., you should go to a laundromat to do this.

Before putting it in the washer, get a big safety pin and put it through the head of the zipper, and zip it over the zipper to prevent it from coming undone. That happened to us and it took Herculean efforts to put it back together. In fact, after all the effort it took, I ended up SEWING the zipper before getting to the bottom so that I never had to do it again!

I would allow the sleeping bag to dry by hanging it up, if there is any way you can do that. Otherwise, put it on a lower setting at the laundromat. It might take a while, but don't put it on the high setting.

Good luck!
Dawn

When you take it to the laundry mat, you will not needs as much detergent as you usually use. Follow the directions on the machine or on your detergent bottle.

For ours, I wash one at a time, make sure it is unzipped. I have not had any problems except with a string that is attached to help roll it up. I just make sure it is not caught on the agitator when I pull it out. If you have a smell to it, add some vinegar to the load.

I use my top loader all the time to wash ours...who knew?????

I just make sure it's evenly laid out and if the machine becomes unbalanced I shake it out and pull the button out again. I never have any real issues.

I have a Kenmore Top loader - King Size and I can fit a sleeping bag in it without any problems.

I use baking soda to help with the smokey smell and detergent.

GOOD LUCK!!
