How to Upgrade Software on the MAC

I have a MAC desktop, with version MAC OS X 10.5.8. Apparently this is an old system and should be upgraded as I get messages when I try to do things that my operating system doesn't support it. I tried to upgrade to whatever animal is the recent, I think Mountain Lion, but I don't have version 10.6 or later so it doesn't work. Says I have to upgrade to something else first. Anyone good with MACs to tell me what to upgrade to? My service contract expired so I would need to pay $20 just to talk to someone to find out.

What can I do next?

If the computer is really old, you may not be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion. But you should still be able to update to Lion (10.7), which will get you some of the functionality, and should allow you to run the latest updates on your other software. First thing is to check and make sure your computer has enough brain power to run Mountain Lion. See the link below for more specifics: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4200653?start=0&...

It sounds like you'll need to call Apple Tech Support in order to purchase Snow Leopard (10.6) since that is no longer sold in the App Store, and then you can upgrade from there (to Lion, then Mountain Lion), from the App Store. Good luck! :)

Do you mean upgrade... or update???

If your system does not support the most current OS, then you can't upgrade.

Try calling the Apple store.

Apple may charge a lot for their kit but their OS system Disks or downmloads are modestly priced and well supported whilst they are current.

Good luck!

How old is your Mac desktop? Many of the older ones can't run 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or 10.7 (Mountain Lion). If you have a PowerPC based system (G4 or G5), then 10.6 or later will not run on your system. For 10.7 you need a system with at least a Core 2 Duo (a Core Duo won't cut it). You don't give any details on the system you're using. If you're not sure, go to the Apple icon in the menu bar, select About This Mac, and if you don't see Core 2 Duo or Xeon next to where it says Processor, then 10.7 will not run on your system.

If you DO have a Core 2 Duo, then first you need to download 10.6 and install that. Then download 10.7 and install that. Just be aware that some of your software may not work on the updated OS. Personally, unless there's new software that you want to run that won't unless you have 10.7, I wouldn't do it.

You can just walk into Best Buy and they will tell you the most recent operating system.
Or - if there is an apple store - you can go to the genius bar.
