How to Swaddle a 4 Month Old

My 4 month old is still unable to sleep restfully on his back without having his arms swaddled. I've been using the M* Blanket with great success (especially since it gives me the option to either let his legs go free or keep them snuggly swaddled). However, he has wriggled his way out of it the past couple of nights. I think I have heard of mothers using two different types of swaddlers(one on top of the other). Has anyone had any success with that? If so, what types of swaddle blankets did you use? If not, do you have any other suggestions?

ps I try to put him down for a nap just about everyday without being swaddled...he's definitely not ready yet.

So What Happened?

The safety/diaper pin did the trick - and saved me from spending money on new swaddlers . My little guy is now safely swaddled in his crib. Thank you all for your suggestions.

My son is almost 10 months old and still sleeps much better swaddled. We'vejust moved to progressively bigger blankets as he's grown.

check out "Baby Merlin Magic Sleep Suit" online. It may be a good transition from the swaddle. I have not used it but my friend swears by it. good luck!

Hi S.,
I had to swaddle my now 18 month old until she was 6 months and we used the miracle blanket and it was great. She would wake up if not swaddled or if she got unwrapped. She did let us know when she wanted out and we tried during naps and the naps eventually helped and were short to begin with but then got longer. She is a wonderful sleeper now and I never felt like she was going to sleep without being swaddled. He will sleep one day with no swaddle and you will watch him and be amazed.

I'm a new mom and it seems like by the time we stress over something it is resolved and is onto something new. Good luck! R.

We sewed velcro on the Miracle blanket once our kids started getting out! Also remember using a safety pin through all the layers to hold it tight, but dont remember if that was in addition to the velcro or before we thought of the velcro idea (obviously, becareful if you do this). We were able to keep them in it until about 6 months old that way! And we only stopped then as they learned to roll over to their tummy while still swaddled up tight - so stopped for safety reasons. Good luck!

when my kids were babies I would use receiving blankets. They do tend to wiggle themselves out, but it you wrap them tight and check on them often to make sure they are still snug, it should work pretty well. Use 2 and have them wrap in opposite directions if 1 isnt enough.

Try the Swaddle Me wrap. It's got velcro on it so they can't wriggle out. We loved them for both of our kids. They sell at Babies R Us for about $10, come in 2 sizes, and you can get them in either cotton or fleece.

My daughter is 3.5 months and we have been using the mirable blanket(http://www.miracleblanket.com). Not sure if you are referring to this one when you say M blanket. This worked pretty well until about 2.5 months. But now that she is growing we mostly use two recieving blankets one on top of another. This calms her and puts her to sleep quickly. Most of the time her hands are already out of it in few hours but it almost has become a routine for her as we swaddle her only in the night before going to bed and it seems she knows that and calms down and is ready to sleep for the night.

I know you said hes not ready to sleep un-swaddled yet, but if he can wriggle out of the swaddling blanket, that is the indication that its time to stop swaddling. Its a safety issue at that point, because if he can wriggle out of the blanket, he could also get it up over his head and impede proper breathing.
As far as putting the baby on his back to sleep, what my pediatrician told me when my son was 4 months old and started rolling over is that once a child is able to manipulate their body enough to roll over, they can sleep in whatever position they like. Put them on their back initially, but if they flip on their own, theres nothing you can do. Just make sure theres nothing in the crib in which he can become entangled. I used to put my son to sleep on nothing but a fitted sheet on the crib mattress.
