Hi Mamas, My youngest broke her arm and has to keep it in a cast for 4 weeks. She says often that her arm itches. Has anyone had a kid in a cast and found a way to reduce the itching? I read something about a cast cooler. Has anyone tried one?

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

When my son had a leg cast they told us to use a hair dryer. When that wasn't working they had us come in. He kept getting really bad rashes underneath his cast. He was on antibiotics because of the rashes in case it was MRSA because it was pretty bad. Testing reviled it wasn't but while waiting for results they wanted to be proactive. They had to remove the cast and replace it once and by the third time it had healed enough that they put him in a walking boot instead. If a hair dryer isn't helping and it's really bothering her I would bring her in. They may need to recast it or change it out.

Hair dryer is good, it dries out the moisture and prevents so much itching.... Buuut it really doesn't do much when your arm ITCHES right now. I used to use a chopstick under my cast(s.... Lol.) when I had broken bones... When my dd broke her arm at 3.5 yo, I was really hesitant to stick anything in there to relieve the itching (you really aren't supposed to... If you scratch the skin you have a higher chance of infection... If you cut a little deeper, you have no way to treat it, if the item you are using breaks it's stuck in there....) buuut, eventually I felt bad enough for her that I occasionally (and very carefully...) used a chopstick to scratch.

I also want to say to buy some moleskin (the kind with adhesive on one side...) use that to protect the cast on her palm/around her thumb. The padding they use for that area tends to get really grimy, and it will compact down some so that the rough edge of the cast chafes. The moleskin is great because you can peel it off and replace it, and it adds a nice soft barrier for your skin. I switched my daughters out every 3-5 days, then it started to stink.

When my little brother was four and broke his arm, (a LONG time ago) we used a hair dryer. Hope your LO feels better soon!

We were also told to use a blowdryer set on the coolest setting.

I remember when I was a kid and broke my arm, I'd stick a metal ruler in there to scratch my arm. I'm sure that is a really bad idea, but it worked!

If it's a spot that she just needs to scratch, use a wire hanger. Just straighten it out and she can stick it in there and relieve it.

Oh no! I'm so sorry! We went through that with my son years ago. And he itched something awful. There was nothing for it, I'm sorry to say. I'd try to keep his mind off of it with this or that. Eventually it would stop itching.

Not much help, but I'm sorry for you both!

Is it plaster? or fiberglass? If it's fiberglass you can get it wet. I had a fiberglass cast on my leg once. I stood in the shower with the water running in it then squirted some shampoo in the top then swished it up and down. Tons of suds came out all over. When my cast came off I didn't have any dead skin build up.

If it's plaster then you're pretty much limited to what you can poke down between the side and the skin and wiggle it around to relieve the itch. I think a wire hanger undone is probably the most handy.

our doc told us to give our daughter a benadryl if there was itching. He said under no circumstances to stick anything in it to itch it because it was practically a guaranteed infection.

Did you get the waterproof one? My daughter broke her arm this past summer and was in a cast for 6 weeks. We opted to pay a little extra to get the waterproof one. Anytime it itched we would just run it under cool water and it stopped the itching.

Super fast shipping too and worked really well for my son. Buy two, one for school and one for home.

Nope, we gave her Advil, though, and it seemed to work as a placebo.
