Eggs will do it. So will rice or rice water if you can get them to drink it. This has been in my family for ages and is very good at stopping diarhea. C.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to slow down diarrhea during rotavirus? My sister-in-law's kids both have it and she's tried everything: liquids, bananas, apples, oatmeal... just wondering if you have any secrets out there that we cant' think of! :) THANKS!

Hi,
My lil' boy(14 months old) had the rotavirus with both diarrhea and vomiting just last week.
One thing your sister should avoid is milk, juices. Recent studies mention that the BRAT diet may not be too effective after all.
We gave him pedialyte for one whole day and the diarrhea still didn't stop or reduce. So we went by the Indian way and gave him rice water(boil 1/4 cup of rice in about 2-3 cups of water, until it is overcooked and boiling. Use the water to feed your child(you can add a little salt). Mind you, it's not very tasty but it stops the diarrhea right away! (starch in rice is very effective) So are others starchy foods like rice, potato etc.
Good luck and hope your sister-in-law's kids get better-it not fun to be sick with Rotavirus-I think it's harder on the parents.
Thanks,
raine
My 10 month old son just got over rotavirus. The diarrhea lasted for three weeks, but at least the fever broke after 2 weeks! LOL but nothing helped the diarrhea. I did the BRAT diet the whole time, and it didn't help at all. He drank a ton of the Gerber Liquilytes, he liked them better than Pedialyte. Hope they get better soon!
My son is a year old and had rotavirus at 11 months. No matter what we did his diarhea would not stop- or the vomiting. we tried pedialyte, gatorade, water, u name it. He ended up needing an IV for a day b/c he was slightly dehydrated from having such bad diahrea- just have her becareful- especially if the kids are infants.
I'm not a fan of the BRAT diet, but you could try Culturelle and yogurt. It's supposed to lessen the duration of the diarrhea by repopulating the intestines with "good" bacteria.
Good luck!
My son had it and the only thing that slightly helped was the BRAT diet. (Bananas, rice, apples, toast) Unfortunately, not a whole lot. The only thing you can really do is let the virus run its course. It took us at least three weeks and then it took another month for his digestive system to become 'normal'. I used probiotics (one tablet a day) to help get his digestive system back on track. My pediatrician suggested it, but ask you own pediatrician first. Good Luck-Rotavirus is the worst!
Yogurt. As long as they aren't vomiting, give them yogurt.
Their little bodies need the "good" bacteria to be re -introduced into their g.i. system. If they will drink it, you could try Rice milk. My son drinks it due to an allergy, (we get him Vanilla). When he had the virus, he had minimal diarrhea.
my son seems to have that right now...i tried the pediasure(he hates and i cant get him to drink it) because he just about quit eating and drinking all together. I am now having some luck with pedialyte mixed with water(not stopping the diarrhea but at least he is staying hydrated). My boyfriend did some looking on the internet and it says to stay away from juices because the sugar makes it worse and also that dairy is not good because the dehydration can make them temporarily lactose intolerant). The diarrhea can last for a couple of weeks and i think you just have to wait it out.
good luck!
sorry, my son had it last year.. nothing.. just keep changing the diapers and try to keep fluids in.. brat diet is best or pedialyt, but still, it has to run it's course.. keeping fluids in is important...
Be very careful! I had that run through my daycare one time and had 3 go to the emergency room due to dehydration - one was admitted for a couple days. She must have been to the dr. if she knows for sure it's rotavirus? I would go back if it is not settling down, you don't want the kids to get dehydrated. Also it's super contagious, so i would think it's possible that they are reinfecting each other.
