Hello,
I'm wondering if there are any tips on how to stop the milk flow from my breast. I'm weaning my 13 month old pretty soon, but I want to stop the milk flow first before he stops nursing.
Any tips?

Thank you in advance
M.

I wish I also actually knew this answer as I'm going to be doing the same with my dd soon but I believe you just quit feedings altogether and you will just dry up? Sorry I'm not much help.

Nursing is based on supply and demand. So as your son nurses less, you'll produce less milk. Positive forms of distraction (offering milk in a sippy cup, food, books, activities) are the best way to gently and slowly wean your son from the breast. Good luck!

Your breasts will always have milk, and by this time, leaking would be non-existent, so if that is your worry, then don't worry. Milk will only be expelled by a suckling child - because not even expensive pumps would be able to pump out much if any milk at this stage.

An easy way is to take cold med's, but I would check with you doctor first.

Its all about supply and demand as others have said. Slowly drop feedings one by one...like every week or two and eventually there won't be much there and he will just stop...without a fight : - ) Good luck!

Hi M.-

Milk supply can also be lessened with mint (ie mint teas). But when your toddler suckles, the milk will be stimulated. Make sure you don't have the expectation that he will nurse and not receive anything. That's what pacifiers are, not mommies!

Best regards!

Just as everyone has said, supply and demand. As long as your son nurses, you'll produce milk. Cabbage leaves are actually recommended to new breastfeeding moms to help with sore nipples, but I know they only help dwindle milk supply; not dry it up. There's no way to stop the flow BEFORE he weans...

I know breastfeeding is only recommended for 6 months exclusively, but the AAP is now recommending at least 2 years and as long as mom and baby are comfortable. Just out of curiosity, why are you weaning so early? If there are social pressures, think about what you and baby want, not anyone else. The benefits to you both are endless and will continue for as long as you continue to breastfeed. Your milk is always changing with your baby, and the milk he'll get at age 2 is very different from the milk he's getting now at 13 months. Every month counts, and that's not just the first 6 :) Just something to consider since I don't know the reason behind the weaning....

Nursing signals your body to produce milk. As long as your child is nursing your body will try to produce to meet the demand.

You can lessen it by feeding less and starting to supplement with whole milk, but it will not fully stop until you fully stop nursing. I have heard that cabbage leaves in your bra can help, but i am not sure how or why.

There is a tea called "No More Milk" by Earth Mama Angel Baby that may help. You may be able to get the tea from Vitamin Shoppe in Pinole.

But your body will still respond to your little one nursing, so the only way to really stop the milk from flowing is to slowly decrease the feedings until you are totally weaned.

The cabbage is to help with sore nipples, I've never heard of it decreasing milk supply. However, cold compresses may help...
