How to soothe eczema on a 13 months old baby?

Hi P. I know of an excellent product that helps with eczema, two of my friends have taken it and their 12 month old and 3 year old no longer have eczema after taking it and staying on the maintenance dose, to keep them eczema free .If you will call me I will tell you all about it. ###-###-#### (It is hard to explain on this small space, I could tell you what it's called, but it would do you no justice without explaining what it is and how it works) or you can e-mail me at ____@____.com I don't know of one person who has taken it that it hasn't helped hundreds have taken it. Hi P., I have a GREAT product. Trust me on this one. It is an aloe gel that I have used for years and have recommended to many people who have had issues like this and others that they can't seem to clear up. If you go to this site you can read why it is not like other aloes. It is a sm. company in Saratoga NY when I used to live. Two out of my three sons had eczema,the youngest was born with it.Believe this or not,but after he was born the midwife asked if we could delay bathing him until some expectant mothers could come see how to bathe a baby.I agreed. She saw the eczema and put a cap full of olive oil in the water.She suggested this for a week and I can tell you that by the end if it he was all pink and soft.It was something that I continued to use for many years.Its pure and has absolutely no side effects.
There is someting that is causing your little ones eczema,because its a symptom.My eldest son was allergic to food colourings and additives and his eczema would bleed terribly,so I cut out all that he ate on a regular basis,bought his little snacks from the health store and slowly introduced his old diet back in.Thats when I discovered he reacted badly to red and orange food colourings and any food that was 'instant'.The youngest son broke out after drinking coke and eating chocolate.Thankfully both boys grew out of it,however a previous poster hit on something about humidifiers.Its a well known fact that children who out grow eczema will likely develop asthma.Its all in the same family.My eldest son did.But watching his diet helped immensely.
Also as a footnote,in Britain,a baby or infant who has eczema was not allowed any vaccinations,because many of them contained egg white and children can be allergic to it.

Hi~ Both of my kids have skin issues and the doctor has recommended hydrocortisone cream 1% (and go back for a prescription of a higher % if that doesn't work). I've also used Cetaphil lotion with a little success, and Arbonne's baby oil (given to me for free). The trick is being consistent. I've had success with the hydro. cream only when I used it on them three times a day without fail.
Also, I was told to limit the baths to every other day and watch the amount of soap I'm using. I only use Dreft for their clothes, and when I stop, they flare up. Supposedly you only have to use that for the first year or so, but I still use it (and they're 5 and 2) because it just works, so why mess with it? Good luck!

Elidel cream available by prescription

my daughter has eczema also. our best luck has been to apply vaseline intensive care moisture locking lotion right after bath... as in when she is still almost drippy with moisture. our derm. recommended a lotion w/o fragrance and with dimethicone. he said dimethicone is key. it has worked better than lubriderm for us. the moisture and dryness are hand-in-hand issues.

he also gave us an rx for triamcinolone. i have to use it on her wrists because she scratches at night if not and it interrupts her sleep. it is 40% stronger than hydrocortisone so i don't love using it because of its potency but it has helped her sleep better.

before the vasoline lotion we simply coated her up with vaseline after bath. sounds bad but it was also derm. recommended and the younger ones don't mind it so much. good luck.

We were told that my step son had eczema when he was 8 months old. His mother would never send his lotion. At times, I don't think she ever used it the way his legs looked. So instead of spending a fortune on lotions, I would put baby lotion on him. Everytime I could get him to sit in my lap or if his legs looked like the lotion was soaked in, I would put more on him. (He was the best smelling kid in our house.) It would be cleared up by the time he left our house on Sunday. That is one reason why I don't think it was eczemz. I think it was dry skin. If your daughter is crawling on carpet, she may be allergic to something in the carpet. I would try baby lotion first. Babies don't crawl for long.

Hi P.! Did the doctor tell you this was eczema or is this your guess? My son started getting a rash-like breakout behind his knees when he was a toddler. The doctor gave me a steroid cream and it went away - not what I'd recommend for a child so small. He's now 12 and it was finally diagnosed as a type of dermatitis. It usually appears behind the knees and on the elbows. They gave us Elidel for when the rash appears and he takes a type of allergy medicine every day which can prevent breakouts. Your biggest problem is going to be her age. There are not a whole lot of options out there for someone so young. Aveeno make some good moisturizers, but I'm not sure if they're lanolin-free. hope this helps some. Good luck-L.

Try alveeno products they seem to help my granddaughter. She gets skin rashes also. We have tryed others and this seems to help hers. We use alveeno bath lotions and they even have one for dry skin it has a dark blue cap on it. Good luck and god bless.

My 15 month old son has eczema too. He has just a few spots on his arms and thighs. I use Aveeno baby soothing relief moisture cream. It really helps his eczema look better and I'm sure feel better...no itching.

try cocca butter and then put socks on her feet and just put a real thick layer on her knee. you can also try vasiline, she may still need a medicated cream but this works really well too.

My son's excema turned out to be food allergy related. So you might want to investigate what she's eating whether through regular food or from your breast milk if she's still nursing. My son's 2 1/2 and we've just recently found this out. His biggest issues have been with peanuts, of course, and with dairy, wheat, soy, apples, onions, etc... just as an example. We have him on a gluten-free casein-free soy-free diet and that has helped his excema. He had it from day 1. He'd wake up sometimes with his whole face red and his scalp all irritated. We were told to use the Eucerin but that didn't help us. Since your daughter already seems to have the allergy with lanonin, you might also see if you can determine if she's allergic to the detergent, either with her clothes or yours or if there's something else she comes in contact with that causes her problem. That would be my advice.

My son has eczema also, along with asthma. His eczema would be fine until he was about togetsick and than his whole body was covered in it. His alergist gave him something called atarax. It is a liquid medicine that works wonders. I give it to him once a day at bedtime unless he is broke out with it, thenhe gets it 3x a day. Not only does it help the rash to go away, but keeps it from itching so badly. Also, I use Aveeno lotion on him 1x a day after his bath. Ask the pharmacist it's not prescription, but it's not found on the isles. I go to Target for it. Lanolin FREE!
I get the cleanser and the lotion. There is a cream as well but the lotion seems to work for my children.

This was suggested by our dermatologist, since I have had all three children in there for this condition too!

I do think that as long as you are using "free" products, free of dyes, scents etc on everything that touches her/his skin you should be okay. Those soaps, detergents, fabric softeners are the worst for skin.

Also, avoid baby shampoos and soaps these also contain ingredients that works up an eczema condition. So we don't ever use anything but California Baby Sensitive Shampoo for their hair and then a leave in conditioner.

I'm a mother of 2 boys ages 3 and 7 both with eczema. My 7 year old has been on Elocon cream for a while since about the age of 4 I guess and it works wonders for eczema. The doctor has to prescribe it but it works for us. Of course, it has steroids in it so I don't know if they would recommend it for a 13month old. However, my 3 year old was put on Elidel since he was so much younger and it works good also. They both use Locoid cream to keep the skin moisturized. You may want to ask your pediatrician about options for your child. I think you will be very pleased. One more thing, don't keep her in the water long periods of time, it dries the skin out. When I get mine out of the tub, I pat them dry with the towel. Hope this helps.

I know you have received a lot of responses... We struggle with my son's eczema. He has a severe egg allergy and if gets one little morsel of food with egg in it, we have some pretty bad flare-ups. We use a prescription hydrocortizone ointment we got from the ped to use on his flareups which works the best of anything. I would mention that to the ped next time you take her in if you think it is bad enough.
Also, if you are going to use lotions, use something free of all fragrances, preservatives, and unnecessary chemicals. I would recommend California Baby brand (you can get it at Target). Also, eliminate all fragrances in everything you use on her- detergents, soaps, and shampoos (again, check out California Baby). Good luck...

We have been eating for Blood type A as we are both A's since Oct 2009. We did not jump in by cleaning out the pantry, but added more veggies and replaced the rest as they were needed with the beneficials for our type. Result her Eczema all but disappeared over night!!!

I still lean organic and all natural... another nice but unexpected result was I have dropped 20lbs without trying and not because I am eating less just differently!! I also, feel better and less stressed/anxious/tired!

My daughter has had the same problem since she was 9months. My baby girl has had bouts of eczema as well. The Eucerin made it worse for her as well. We've found the only thing that eases it is Aveeno Baby moisture lotion. It's the one with the light blue top. There is another thicker version of their lotion with a dark blue, almost purple top that has a similar consistency to the Eucerin that did not work for her. Hope this helps. Oh, we also started using Aveeno baby bath products as well, and that helped, too.

My daughter is 6 and has eczema mostly on her legs. Has had it since she was born. I use Cortizone 10 plus and Aveeno lotion. I use them together. The cortizone first and then the Aveeno. I don't think the cortizone has lanolin in it. I did look at the label but it is so small it is hard to read. The Aveeno I am not sure on, you will have to check the label on that.

Other than that, your doctor can prescribe a cream that works wonderfully for my daughter. It is called triamcinolone Acetonide cream usp, 0.1%. That usually makes it go away within 24-48 hours. Keep it moisturized so she doesn't scratch. My daughter gets outbreaks all over her legs and although I can keep her from scratching during the day, she scratches at night.

For my son I used hydrocortizone when it was red and inflamed. That took the redness away then I started useing Aquaphor Healing Ointment everyday. It has no lanolin. It went away almost immediatly and hasn't come back. It is from Eucerin. It is a skin protectant and can be used to prevent diaper rashs and it has many other uses also.

I have had Eczema for most of my life. I also have it on the tops of my feet and the tops of my hands...(and scalp, face and neck). I am now 32 yrs old and have tried everything under the sun! Since your baby is allergic to lanolin, she can't use a non-steroidal cream such as Elidel. This is what I currently use and it works well. I've done some research for you and found a 'Lanolin Free' cream used to treat eczema in infants and children. It's made by Camomile House - SK Cream(30g) - Lanolin Free. Try to use a very low potency steroid on it for about 1-2 weeks. Keep it just on the area of the eczema. Your pharmacist can probably recommend one or you can just use OTC hydrocortisone. Use it once to twice a day on the area, for NO LONGER than 2 weeks, because that can start to thin the skin. It will relieve the discomfort and also help it heal.

My 8 year old has suffered her whole life with eczema (many different allergies) ... tried MANY different over the counter and steroid creams and found the most amazing product this year ... CeraVe moisturizing cream. It is over the counter and was recommended by Dr. Neil Prose at Duke Pediatric Dermotology. I wish we had know about this years ago. This is the BEST cream we have used! Although I have a 12-year-old stepdaughter whom has lived with my husband and I since she was 6, I do not know a whole lot about small children as far as what medications you can give them, etc. But I do know about eczema. I have really, really bad eczema on the tops of my hands and, sometimes, if left untreated, it starts to go down on my wrists and forearms as well. It gets a lot worse in the winter and fall or when it's chilly outside and the wind is blowing. My doctor gave me a steriod cream. It works really good. I don't put it on during the day due to cleaning the house and washing my hands a lot. I usually but it on at bedtime and then put some really soft, chenille gloves on to keep the cream from rubbing off on the sheets while I sleep and to help it absorb better. The doctor told me not to use it everyday though because steriod creams can cause your skin to become thin, but only with everyday use.

I know there are a lot of OTC products that have worked for people, but I finally gave up experimenting and talked to the dr. I didn't really want to use the steroid cream, but we gave in and did it, and it cleared his up beautifully! A couple of spots have been stubborn and recurring, but instead of recurring after a few days, they were taking several weeks to pop back up, and a day of cream (instead of the maximum seven days) would clear them up. I think we have the last two spots conquered, and we still have a nearly full tube of cream! So, it might be worth talking to the dr just to see if you can get it done and out of the way!

My baby girl also suffered from eczema and I've used 2 products that have made wonders:

1) Mustela Dermo-Pediatrics, Stelatopia Moisturizing Cream
2) A-Derma Exomega Treatment Bath

The second product is hard to find, but I have purchased it in a website specialized in french cosmetic products (I originally learned about it from a Dermatologist in Mexico)

You would need to check the ingredients,but Gentle Naturals (I think that's the name) makes an Eczema Baby Wash and Cream. You'll know it's the right one because it has Winnie the Pooh on the box. I've found it at Target, Meijer and Babies R Us. It worked great for both of my babies. Good luck.

I have a 16 month old that has had excema since birth. I've done cortisone and steroid cream too. The best thing I've found for my child is Burt's Bees lotion. Also, by accident I discovered something else that helped... We bought a humidifier to help when my son was having problems with stuffiness. We noticed during the times we used it that his excema cleared up! I don't know why doctor's don't recommend this... It makes sense!

Hey, My doc gave me a Rx Hydrocordizone cream that did wonders for my son. I dont' know if that is what your child is allergic to or not. We were also told to put Baking Soda in his bath because that would help hold in moisture. it worked really well.

Hi P.. Looks like you've gotten a lot of responses, but just thought I'd share our experience. My son has eczema, although very mild. I have been able to keep it completely under control with the recommendations of our doctor. I just use dove body wash for sensitive skin to bathe him with and plain vaseline (petroleum jelly) after a bath. It works like a charm, it's inexpensive and don't have to worry about your daughter getting to much of corticosteriods with things such as hydrocortisone cream. His eczema is now under control enough that I only have to use the vaseline occasionally. We just have to stay away from other lotions and soaps because they irritate and dry his skin. I have eczema...it am allergic to artificial coloring in food and it causes horrible eczema on my scalp and legs if I let it in into my diet. I would first do some research about food allergies to see if you can eliminate anything from her diet that could be causing the eczema. Aside from that, try olive oil! Rub it into the skin really well before bed for a couple nights and you'll see a huge difference! No steroids, no expensive creams...just olive oil. It's amazing stuff.

I have horrible eczema on my hands and what helps is fragrance free curel.

Try using "Udder Cream" or "Bag Balm". They work as well on my eczema as my prescription steroid cream! I also use it on my (now 19 month old) twins who both have eczema. I wish someone had told me about it years ago.

My 2 sons both have very bad eczema. We have tried every lotion under the sun it seems like. Its gotten to the point where my oldest wakes up in the middle of the night itching until he is bleeding. The doctor has put him on a steroid cream and an antihistamine for the itching. I recently decided to give baby oil a try. I use it myself after I shave because I too have very dry skin. It has worked miracles!! He doesn't itch anymore AT ALL!! And it is so much cheaper than all of that Aveno lotion. Since I have started the baby oil I haven't had to give any of his other medications to him. Good Luck!!

Dear P., The very best things I have found for any/all skin problems from bites to rashes are these:

White Vinegar...it smells/stinks BUT IT WORKS!!! Vinegar kills germs and nutralizes the skins ph. It also cools the skin, ca;ms the nerve endings;as well as takes the redness away.Works for sunburns the same way!

Vicks Salve....it comes in many frangrances,but I use the standard (like Your Grandmother used). It really works on everything from bug bites to itchies/oowwies. It keeps the skin cool and moist; dryness will cause itching. Plus its CHEAP!!!!

Just keep the places washed/wiped clean and patted dry several times a day...germs grow non-stop. If you are having trouble with her scratching.... cut the top off an old sock (tube sock) this will keep her from scratching as well as keeping her clothing from rubbing and further irritating the spots.

P.S. There is one more thought...a product called Silver Water...you can get it at a health food store or you can make your own. Boil water and place a silver spoon or other utensil in the pot as it boils. Let the water cool and bath the wound/place with the silver water and mild soap or betadine(if you have some).store in a dark place (in a glass jar) or in the frig.
I don't understand how/why this works...but it does!!! Once my friends' small child burned his arm accidentally...all they used was silver water an a mild soap...there was never a scar and it healed rather quickly!!!
I have seen this work on many different wounds/scrapes & cuts. Try it!

Like Wendy before me...I also work with The MOM Team and Melaleuca...I just wanted to share with you our experience...All my life I've had one skin irritation after the other...I was treated as a child for scabies (Very humiliating!) only to find out that the rash was caused from a fuzzy blanket my parents had recently bought...I have always had really dry skin my hands would crack and bleed to the point, I would try to avoid running water over them at times, because it hurt so bad. We switched over to Melaleuca's laundry det and bath soaps and the Renew lotion that Wendy talked about. ALL the skin rashes, irritations, and dry cracked bleeding STOPPED! I wasn't sure if it was their products for sure until we ran out. I started using the old products that we had left over...when I did the itching, rashes, dry skin all came back. I even tried some other products Popular Kids brands that my mom sent me, and found they made my daughter break out even more. One made her break out and had her looking like she had a red rash all over her back and her legs looked like she had gotten into posion ivy. Another burned her nose and cheeks. Needless to say...Since it's working I'm sticking with it.

My daughter has had eczema almost since birth. She's now 10 months old. Hers is partially caused by an allergy to dairy and eggs. We have been to many doctors and tried practically every cream and ointment in existence. The best we have found is using olive oil right after her bath (the light not extra virgin-doesn't smell)and then we use Cera Ve. The olive oil is especially good for any parts baby puts in her mouth, such as hands. You have to ask for Cera Ve at the pharmacy counter. They may have to order it for you. Hydrocortozone helps when there's itchiness. The Triamcinolone is also very good if hydrocortozone is not strong enough. We are careful with the steroid creams because, if used in excess, they can cause permanant skin damage.

Something to keep in mind is that eczema is not a rash that is itchy, it is an itch that rashes. So, if your baby has patches of rash she is probably itchy.

Make sure you are using allergy free soap products for the laundry, bathing, etc.

Consider food allergies. Try to have her eat only foods free of additives, food colorings, etc. Eliminate any suspected food for a few days and see if it helps.

Consider adding a tiny bit of Omega 3 supplement to her milk or formula. Eczema can be a sign of Omega 3 deficiency. Or get a yummy lemon flavored Omega 3 oil supplement and see if she likes it straight (tiny amounts).

Food dyes (especially yellow #5 and #6) can cause eczema and many other allergies. Take a good look at www.Feingold.org. Feingold is a 30yr old non-profit organization whose purpose is to inform the public about the negative side effects of artificial ingredients. There are many harsh chemicals in most drug store lotions. Go to a natural food store(Whole Foods)and find an all-natural lotion. My friend uses plain almond oil on her daughter's skin. Good luck.

Triple Paste eczema cream is the best over the counter i have found. My 14 month old uses a prescription as well.

try aveno products. they are made with colloidal oatmeal and are good for very dry, sensitive skin.

My son has eczema and the only thing that doesn't irritate his skin is the gold bond lotion. For bathing he does well with burts bees or california baby..

My daughter has had eczema since she was 4 months old (she is now 27 months). We use Vanicream. It has worked like a charm. And for those occasional flare ups we use 0.5% hydocortisone cream in the morning & at bedtime for those areas (except the face). I'm not sure if it contains lanolin or not. But you can purchase it at most pharmacies (they keep it behind the counter). We buy it @ Walgreens because they always keep it in stock. Also we use California Baby body/shampoo & sunscreen. I was just reading about this for my daughter and if you take the peel of a bananna and rub it on the spots it is suppose to work. My daughter is trying it now. It was in a ladys home journal I think.

The other thing that I used on my son was Arbonne. It worked great on my son but it is costly, my sister sells it so it helped on the cost.

My son also had eczema on his face when he was young. I used Vanicream. It is a dermatologic formula for sensitive skin. It is fre of dyes, fragrance, masking fragrance, lanolin, parabens, and formaldehyde. I got it at Wal-mart in the pharmacy. They keep it behind the counter and you have to ask for it. They may also have to order it for you if it is not on hand but it seemed to really work. I applied it daily. It seems like it was a little expensive. I haven't bought it for a while my son grew out of it but it seems like it was around $16-$18.oo for 1 lb but it goes a long way. There is a website on my container. It is www.psico.com. Aveeno baby soap and aveeno lotion worked for my daughter. She had it on her face,
and I hated the way the eucerin made her face so shiny. I just imagined everything sticking to her face. The aveeno worked alot better. Hope it clears up.

I battled this severly with my youngest. Doctor finally told me to use Cetaphil to completely bathe him in - hair and body. This helps a great deal but every few days I do have to use a prescribed ointment for the itch and flair ups. I've tried all the OTC medications, lotions and creams for him and nothing else has worked. Dr said she didn't want to send him for allergy testing if this worked since he should outgrow it. My daughter had it pretty bad too just not as bad as my youngest and she did outgrow it by the time she was 2. Good luck to you!

my son had eczema and my dr told me to put hydrocortizone cream on the affected areas and i also used a cream by Gentle Naturals specially made for eczema found in the baby lotion isle to keep it at bay and both worked really well.

I have had eczema since I was 6 months old. It can be very difficult to treat. The areas you are describing are problem areas any way due to excess sweating. Oatmeal is a great relief for eczema and the itchiness. The Aveeno baby lotion may help. I hate to say try the hydrocortizone creams on her so young, but that is what my mom had to do. Also for her feet try vaseline at night with white socks on them. I had it bad on my hands and wore white gloves for years. I hope some of these tips help.

My daughter has eczema also and is allergic to so many lotions and creams. We put Aquaphore on her (not sure of the spelling) on her twice a day all over her entire body and it has really been a life saver. The doctor said the most important time is right after the bath so it absorbs into her skin. If you haven't tried it, it really works great. Hope that helps! Also, they sometimes tell you washing them less often is helpful but a nightly bath with this product really is great. Also, we switched her to the sensitive skin Dove soap (bar not liquid) which contains lotion and that has helped with her problem. Hope this helps. Good luck.

The dermatologist had the pharmacy mix up a special cream for my son when nothing else seemed to work. If you try everything and nothing works take your little one to a dermatologist.

Have you isolated the cause of the ecema? Often times it has to do with food allergies like wheat, dairy, or even artificial coloring. Good luck!

Hello! My 11 year old daughter has had eczema since she was an infant. I started using Eucerin but did not see any improvement. So then my pediatrician told me about Aquaphor. This cleared it up right away. It helps to retain the moisture in her skin. She uses it every night after her bath.

Try shea butter with no additives. My son (17) also has eczema and this (when I can get him to use it) is the only thing that controls his. You should also research eczema related to a variety of foods as well...you'd be amazed what alot of everyday foods we eat can do to our bodies. Good luck with this, I know it's frustrating!

My son was born with Excema all over him and the doctor wanted to put him on cortizone treatments. I had a rash on the lower part of my right leg and I would break out on my arms and itch so bad. I told my regular doctor about the situation and he told me use a mild soap because I had used Ivory soap for years. I started using
Dove which is a little more expensive but I don't itch anymore and you can hardly tell that I have ever had a rash on my leg. The spot is so smooth. I love Dove now.
