Making steamed broccoli for turkey day. My dtr loves it. I would like to add a little something to it (ie light sauce) to jazz it up.

Thoughts?

ADD: MIL doesn't like cheese. I know, who doesn't like cheese? I keep coming back to lemon butter type sauce but don't even know if that is a good one. I usually cook til al dente and add some salt. Basic and simple! Boring?

Simple is good - garlic powder and a couple of squeezes of lemon juice. Or drizzle with olive oil infused with fresh garlic and add toasted pine nuts.

Lemon juice, lemon zest, olive oil, salt and pepper. What would put it over the top delicious is a bit of grated parmesan cheese mixed in, but if MIL doesn't like cheese (and you're right...WHO doesn't like cheese? Seriously, is she an alien?), skip the parm or cheese-free broc aside for her. YUM!

If it doesn't have to be sauce, you can add blackpepper, a touch of honey butter and dash salt...

You can squeeze a little ginger over it and the juice of an orange and it will taste really nice.

After you steam it, sautee some garlic, shallots, salt, and pepper in olive oil, and toss in the broccoli. Pretty mild flavor, and the shallots are pretty sweet if you let them carmelize a bit.

If you add a bit of veggie stock to the water the veggies being steamed take on that flavour - really yummy and super easy

Who doesn't like cheese? I was just going to give a one word answer...cheese.

Do a broccoli rice bake (with cheese!!)...yum. Brown rice, cream of mushroom soup, frozen broccoli, cheddar cheese...oh, that's yummy.

My MIL does a broccoli casserole with roasted almonds and rice...no cheese...and that's yummy too.

My daughter likes broccoli... and all I do is saute it with olive oil and dash of salt.
Tastes great. It is flavorful.
My daughter doesn't think its boring.
And my Hubby who usually doesn't like broccoli that way, actually LIKES it. I caught him trying it out... and hearing him say to himself "wow, good." and then he ate more.
I cook it until it is soft thought. My family doesn't like 'hard' broccoli nor al dente.

But all you have to do to jazz it up is: just drizzle salad dressing on it. Any kind!
Young kids, may not like all highly seasoned, things.

Or, make a bechamel sauce, to go over it. Yum.

How about adding some Teriyaki sauce and water chestnuts?

Two suggestions for you.

First roast the broccoli in the oven instead of steam. Just olive oil and salt. The texture is soft, but the tops are crisp. Also a little sweet. I saw it on Food Network recently and I had never thought to do anything with broccoli other than steam or stir fry, but definitely worth a try.

Second, my mom had her SOS sauce (a sauce to put on any veggie when she could not think what to do.) Soy Sauce, Oyster Sauce, and Sesame oil. You don't need much, just mix them together and put in the pan right before serving.

Looks like you have some great ideas here!

We sprinkle with salt and add shredded cheddar. Yum!

Make a spice mix of equal parts garlic powder, tumeric and black pepper. Put some olive oil on the broccoli then sprinkle with the spice. This spice mix actually amplifies the cancer fighting properties of the broccoli.
Normally I hate black pepper. It makes me choke and cought, but I can't taste it in this mix.
I'm with your MIL about the cheese on broccoli. Wouldn't eat that!

I know your Mil does not like cheese, but what about Parmesan cheese? We sprinkle a little on, you can even put it on the side and let people put their own on.

I love cheese, but not on broccoli. I usually saute minced garlic in olive oil with a little salt and pepper. When the garlic is just turning brown I add the broccoli and some fresh squeezed lemon. Mmmm...yum!

Not sure about sauce, but we always add a little red bell pepper to it just to make it look pretty. Doesn't really change the taste at all, but it does look nice.
