How to Keep a Bandage on 1 Year Old's Finger

Yesterday my 15 month old got her fingers caught in a metal shower drain cover (the entire bathroom is baby proofed except for that). She decided to see if they could fit through the holes. They got in, but I had to pour baby oil in to get the one finger out. The finger has a lot of cuts on it, but none bad enough for stitches. Trying to bandage the little finger took 2 of us and she has pulled the bandage off twice. She always touches everything and has her hands in everything, so I don't want the finger to get infected, but she just won't keep the bandage on. Any ideas or am I going to just have to get rid of the thought of a bandage?

What can I do next?

If you are home with her.. Sew a mitten into her pjs and have her wear them that way she can not take the mitten off. It will help to keep it clean.?

I have to say I did chuckle with the duct Tape response.

My mom had to do this when I had chicken pox, so I would not get them in my mouth and I was a thumb sucker.

Good luck.

ha! Jow!
I never tried to keep it on. I would treat it after they went to sleep (nap and bedtime), bandage it then mainly to keep the neosporin on it.
If you wash her hands regularly and treat it, it should keep infection away.

I would wrap it with gauze and loop medical tape around it and then up and around her wrist if you really want to keep it on. If it's not that bad, just keep her hands as clean as possible and keep an eye on it.

I'm with the do not cover folks, remembering when my one year sucked her finger and the bandaide lodged in her throat! I still have nightmares remembering that day. (Thank God she coughed it out!)

Leave it uncovered.

Put a glove on her (after you apply the bandages).

I don't think you can keep it on during the day, honestly.

I agree w/PP about channeling your inner ninja at night, though.

It might be a losing battle during the daytime, but I'd sneak in after she's asleep and apply some ointment and a bandage for night. Channel your inner ninja.

Based on my experience I wouldn't worry about keeping a band aid on. When my son was 14 month olds, he gave himself a second degree burn to his finger. We couldn't keep a bandage on his finger to save our lives. Our pediatrician's nurse and the urgent care nurse both assured us not to worry about it. Keep the site clean and make sure the baby isn't picking at it was their advice. If you are determined, I think duct tape might be your only recourse. :) Good luck and don't they just find the darnedest things to poke...
