How to Get Rid of Gnats! UGH

I put bug spray around the base/back of my counters and where the backsplash meets the bottoms of the cabinets at night. (Yes, this is a high maintenance thing to do because in the morning, you must thoroughly wash these areas) I then put bowls of vinegar by the drain in each kitchen sink. I did this every night until I didn't have the flies anymore.

It is also of absolute importance that no fruits be left out on the countertops.

I would call a professional and ask them. ... They might be coming from another apartment, not yours.........I would also call the landlord..........I don't know if they make gnat bombs or not, but it wouldn't hurt..........if you have animals be sure to read on what needs to be done.........sometimes you have to wash everything in the kitchen too.........

Look online as well. I'm sure there are some good ideas.....and there are great Mama's on here with lots of help.

You know that black rubber thingy that is in the drain for the disposal? Put on a pair of yellow gloves....dip your hands in some cleaner, (doesnt really matter which) and clean the backside of that black rubber. Then proceed with bleach for a few days at night. If you clean the back of that rubber, you should get alot of GOO off of it.

I use a shallow pan of water and put in a few drops of dishwashing liquid. It attracts them and they get stuck...vinegar works the same way too!

You can also check around the fridge. We had an apartment once where the fridge had some kind of drain pan built in, and when someone had spilled food it collected underneath. That's where the flies were coming from.

It's a long process that you need to keep on top of. Remove any plants from the house, remove any bananas, apples etc or keep them in the fridge. Keep the kitchen sink completely dry. Pour bleach in then wipe it all dry after every use. Keep 20 oz soda bottles around the kitchen that have a half inch to an inch of fruit juice in them. Any remaining fruit flys will land on them, crawl in, and then get stuck. Every morning you can clean them out. You may have about a week of this. One more thing that really works. At the store (even walgreens) you can get fly traps that are cardboard and can hang. They are sticky. Hang one from the kitchen faucet when it's not in use for about a week! You'll be amazed what you catch!

I have had this problem too this year. What has completely worked for me: take a class of water fill it up maybe half way mix in some dish soap and just leave it by the sink. they will die, I kept it out for a few days (changing the water as needed) and they all dissapear. (of course then I go to the store or leave my back door open - neighbor has fruit trees- then I have some more) but each time they all dissapear. This is also safe (but gross)in the event any of my animals or kids get into it :)

I have them terribly and knew it wasn't just me when I saw them at the yogurt shop and at several restaurants. Those places I know don't want them yet they are still there....

I use a glass of vinegar and water, a few drops of oil and a piece of ripe fruit. Then put cling wrap or Press n Seal on top and cut a few small holes. The gnats go in like crazy... and I can control or eliminate the problem. I just keep the glass by the sink during the crazy gnat season.

They are probably fruit flies, I keep a clean house as well but we have citrus trees out back so open the door and in they come. A trick Iearned back in my bartending years was to put balsamic or red wine vinegar in a shallow bowl and pour bleach in the drains ( or distilled vinegar if you don't like chemicals) nightly until they go away.

I have been getting them in my kitchen latley a friend told me to try apple cider vinager in a bowl with half water.....I tried it and it helped a little bit.

We had a bad case of gnats one time at work. Our exterminator said they were coming from the sewer. One of our bosses had us take white vinegar and poor it in a shallow dish. She said they were attracted the the vinegar would fly in, get stuck and die. It helped a little but not completely. Eventually the gnats went away and we haven't seen them again...and that was a few years ago. Good luck!
