How to Get Rid of a Nail Infection

I just had twins 11 weeks ago. My mom was trying to be nice and pamper me so she took the boys for a couple of hours and sent me to get my nails done. I have gotten manicures and pedicures many times and never had an infection, but this time I got one. Has anyone ever gotten one? How long did it take to get rid of it & how did you do it? I bought over the counter liquid you brush on and have been using it for over a week and I still have it!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the help! It seems like it is getting better, although it is taking forever! From everyone's advice I guess thats normal. I dont want to take anything orally since I am breastfeeding, so I will continue to put stuff onit till it grows out

I slammed my nail into a shopping cart the other day. In doing so, my nail actually separated from my skin allowing dirt and everything else to get in there and caused an infection. I was told to soak the nail in white vinegar 2 times a day. And then at night (after soaking it) put vapor rub under the nail, it helps the nail to stay clean. This really helped to clear up the infection and I've continued to do this to prevent more infections while it's still healing. It's simple and cheap...:)

Hi S.,

I had a an infection on one of my fingers from a manicure many years ago. My regular PCP gave me an antibiotic that didn't work. While at an appt. with my OB/GYN, I showed her my finger and she RX's a cream that cleared up the infection in two days. I always give the manicurist a short speech now before they begin so they'll be careful not to cut my cuticles. Good luck

I'm sorry that you are going through this. congrats on your twins, though.

This is why I do my own manicures and pedicures. I know for a fact that the tools used are/were only used on me.

First of all, you have probably contracted a fungal infection(which is not an uncommon occurence at some of these parlors). And, even with the best medications, these infections are hard to treat or the infection will reappear after treatment. One of the most effective (and cheapest) ways to get rid of your nail infection is to rub camphor on your nails and then cover your nails with a bandaid, gauze or some other "breathable" material. If you cannot find pure camphor, buy some Vick's Vapor Rub (which contains camphor) and use it.

Hi S.,

Congratulations on your two blessings!! Sounds like a lot of good advice, however do check with your physician before treating this. I am not trying to sound so extreme but are you familiar with MRSA? You can contract MRSA from salons if they are not clean. Hope this heals quickly and do enjoy those babies.

Congratulations on your twin boys! As far at the infection, my 2yo son is losing his fingernail and it appeared a fungus was growing. I started applying Listerine (the gold color) by cotton ball twice a day and it seems to be helping a lot. The injured nail is not as yellow and thick now and it has been about 1 1/2 weeks. Hope this helps!

S.,

I've been getting manis and pedis for years and I've gotten a few infections. If its just your standard fungal infection tea tree oil is about the best thing I've used. Make sure your nails stay clean and dry. One thing my nail tech use to tell me to do was after washing or showering to hit the infected nail with a blow dryer. If it's bacterial you may have to see the doc for an antibiotic. Hope this helps!

My daughter had a nail infection that would not go away. As I tend to shy away from medicines unless absolutely necessary, I tried herbal remedies and figured it would grow out as the nail grew- not so. Not sure what kind of infection she had (I think it was a fungal infection), but they sent her to a dermatologist who prescribed an antibiotic ointment for her nail. That did the trick and then it did just grow out as the nail grew. So, you might want to check with your doctor on it if it doesn't look like its growing out.

BTW Congratulations on your double blessing! I am mom to twin boys who are now 5, so if you ever want to chat, send me a message!

Dear S.,

Well let me start off by saying i am so sorry that you have gotten an infection, this usually happens when you go to one of the oriental shops, they just arent that clean! We own a salon in Orlando and have had it for the past 13 years, unfortunately you need to go and see your Dr. and he will put you on antibiotics! That is the only way to truly get rid of it!

You should tell everyone which nail salon you went too. So you can save others from this hassle. It seems that some nail salons are not very up with the way they are suppose to do. I had a problem with Diamond Nails in Lake City.

I have had this happen to me as well. Believe it or not Vicks Vabor Rub will clear it up. Put it on as often as you can and as long as it takes to clear up the infection. This may take as long as two months. Just don't quit applying it.

Hi S.,

Melaleuca oil (high grade tea tree oil) is penetrating and will absorb through the nail and it has antifungal and antibacterial qualities. I'm not saying this will happen for you because I don't know what type of infection you have, but I did see the swelling under the root of a nail disappear within an hour after applying it consistently. This girl had had a problem with this nail for about 6 months and she told me it, the swelling and pain, was completely gone by the next day.

God bless!

Congrats on your twins!
If it were me under the circumstances, I would see my Doctor. Not knowing what type of infection or fungus and if it is in your system, I wouldn't take the chance to have further complications if left untreated.
Hope it heals soon, good luck

I have never gotten a manicure or a pedicure because all the stories of how unclean conditions have scared me away.

Sounds like it's time to see a doctor.
