My 14 month old will drink 8 ounces of milk from a bottle but if it is in a sippy cup or straw cup she gags on it and will not touch it! Is this common and if any other moms have experienced this how did they make the transition from bottle to cup? She will drink any other liquid out of a straw cup or sports top bottle. she loves water and drinks a ton. It is just the milk that is an issue.

Hi J., Keep working with her, but only give her the cup, don't give in and give her something else, she won;t let herself thrist to death. Be patient, or you will frustrate her and yourself. Just for future advice sweetie, start the cup early,we introduced the cup to our baby's at 6 months, started reducing the bottle intake at 9 months to one bottle a day, and soley on a cup by 12 months. J.,

Just keep trying... but gently. Every child will eventually learn to use the cup for everything (given that the parents are offering cups). Your daughter is still relatively young and it's not crucial at this time. In the big picture, it's not a super important "time-lined" skill.

Good luck and enjoy this time with your little one.

They often only want milk from a bottle, because is it like a breast/nipple and instinctively they 'know' this is where milk comes from.... so weaning from a bottle is often like weaning from breast. Gradually.

Or what some do, is dilute the milk with water... they won't like it. THEN, put regular full 100% milk in a sippy or straw cup... then they may realize, that only the good milk is in the sippy or straw cup.
Leave the sippy or straw cup out where they can grab it anytime.... so they get used to it and can drink at will. Milk can usually stay out of the fridge for about 2 hours... or at least this is what I heard, and it seems to be fine.

Good luck,
Susan

Dear J.,

Do you ever give her any water to drink? My 11 month old drinks from a cup beautifully, although sometimes she gets overzealous and forgets to breathe. :) What we did a lot was give her a cup of water in the bathtub. She would play with it, spill it on herself (she would suck in her breath when the cool water spilled on her tummy.) I would initially hold it for her and let her sip, roll her tongue around in the water, but since she is very independent she insisted on holding it herself. Try it out!

Hi J.,
My daughter is 15 months old, and I'm having the same problem. I've been trying to wean her from the bottle for a couple of months now, and she'll take a few sips of milk from the sippy cup, but for the most part, wants her milk from the bottle. (Will drink water from the sippy cup, no problem) I feel that when she's ready to fully transition, she will. And in the meantime, I always offer her milk in her cup during meals. Then if she won't drink, I'll give her a bottle at a later time.
I personally don't believe in the cry it out method. But everyone is different. I'm sure if you're patient, she'll eventually transition off on her own. I very much doubt she'll be 2 and still be drinking from a bottle!
Good luck.
