How to Get 11 Month Old to Feed Himself the Bottle/cup

Hello, My 11 month old loves his bottle and will drink from a sippy cup, but he will not feed himself the cup or bottle. I think he wants to figure it out because he gets frustrated when I give him the cup, and will sometimes put it in his mouth and not tip it back. Does anyone know how to help him figure out how to do this? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hey D.,

They all learn the (easy to us) basics but some times just not quite as soon as we would like them to. My dd learned allot of things by watching and mimmicking. I suggest you share the same cup or sit beside him with your own. It worked quite well for me with eating other things too. Good luck - enjoy every moment and lastly - - - Don't sweat the small stuff! :D

Try different types of sippy cups, sometimes that helps.
With my son he also wanted to do it himself but got aggravated when nothing came out because he didn't realize or couldn't lift the cup up high enough. I finally ended up trying the sippy cups with built in straws and he loved that so much better. Then when he got a little older he was able to use a regular big boy cup all by himself and actually never spilled much but he still wasn't crazy about the sippys but could do it all by himself though! Some kids do things sooner than others and vice versa. Even though my son was a little "late" on getting the sippy cup thing down he was advance than most kids in other areas. So be patient, don't get frustrated and try other types of cups. Good luck!

My daughter NEVER lifted a bottle or cup up to drink as a baby. I always figured it was laziness LOL. She was always so independent in every other way and hit all her other milestones early. This cup/bottle thing was the one thing she still liked Mommy to do for her. At about a 11-12 months I actually ended up teaching her to drink from a straw cup and that was my savior since she didn't have to lift it. Playtex makes some great spill-proof sippy cups with straws built in. Good luck!

I always propped my son back a little so that he could drink by himself. He eventually got it. But always still leans back to drink his bottle (he is 18 months old). Your son will learn soon enough. Just give it some time.

Have you tried modeling tipping it? Or helped him tip it?

to get my son to understand he needed to tip it back I sat with him and said "tip it back" and helped him to do it. Then I would pretend to take a sip from his cup and say "See Mama tip it back?" It only took him a couple of days. I am a firm believer in "cheering" if he did it once I would make a huge production out of it I would cheer him and praise him and do high fives. He couldn't wait to show me again how he could do it. Hope this helps.
