How to Form a Nonprofit Youth Sports Organization

Does anyone have any experience with this? My daughter's soccer team is thinking about becoming a nonprofit organization. Legal Zoom offers a service which seems reasonably priced but I don't know how good they are -- has anyone used Legal Zoom services and, if so, how would you rate your experience? I know there are several "how to" and "do it yourself" books on this topic -- has anyone ever formed a nonprofit on their own, and what was that experience like? Any other suggestions? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

because the state gives our schools so little money ALL of our sports, band, cheer etc are their own nonprofits. that way parents and business can donate $$ and get credit for charitable contribution credit on taxes. I am involved in many and none have ever been audited, however, we do pay a CPA to file taxes, manage bank account etc so there is no question of where $ went. I do know a team got in trouble one year becuase they made a profit, which is against the rules for nonprofit status. So if you have $$ left over at end of year you have to do something with it, like throw team party, give gift to coach but cannot refund to those that donated.

I know you want to save money but it is in your best interest if you do this correctly to have a solid plan, have good legal and tax counsel. You do not want to mess up on this and end up with your organization owing a lot of money to the IRS. IRS does not accept "I didn't know that" as an excuse.

Most companies will not donate or provide services unless you are set up with a 501c3 form. You'll also need a W-9.

I work with booster clubs through the school and they are regulated heavily and audited yearly.

Do your homework, get all the information you can before you make a decision, use professionals to guide you. An informed decision is the best decision.

Best wishes to you.

Forming any type of company is fairly easy when you do your research on the particulars. Filling out the paperwork to become a nonprofit organization is not difficult but you want to make certain you know more than just filling out paperwork. What rule, regulations, etc are in place by the IRS that you will have to follow when it comes to your structure, fund raising, spending money, etc.

I would recommend strongly that you do your due diligence and learn more about what is required of you. Try googling 501(c)(3) and see what comes up.

I would also recommend talking to a lawyer beyond Legal Zoom as well as an accountant.

Do a Google Search on:
"Should a kids soccer team become a non-profit organization."
"How To Create a kids soccer team into a non-profit organization."
"Non-profit laws for kids organizations."

Creating non-profits, and for kids... includes many aspects.
Of which, you should consult with a Professional or Attorney, about all the implications of it and who is going to manage it all. It can be a foundation or non-profit etc.
With kids organizations, often times, background checks need to be made etc. Many details. It is more than just filling out paperwork.
