Hi! I have a wonderful, easy going 18 month old son...so I know I shouldn't complain, but does anyone have any ideas on how to keep a toddler occupied in a car seat? I am trying to avoid putting a DVD in my car as I do not want to expose him to too much TV so soon. I never leave home without a sippy cup and some crackers for him. I pass him books and small toys throughout our commute (we drive back and forth to daycare all week). Just wondering if anyone had some neat ideas??
Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

Why make your life so hard. Get a portable DVD, it will work wonders. There is nothing wrong with it. They learn a LOT from cartoons/shows today. They usually are educational and lesson learning involved.

Personally, I watched tons of tv growing up, and it was not educational like they are today, and I turned out just fine.

It is up to you, but why put yourself and your babies life in jeopardy getting distracted while driving. I don't have it on all the time, maybe 20-30%, other times I sing or talk or give him some of his 100 toys I have in there.

Do you have any children's song CD's?? Those always kept my kids entertained. You have to find one you really like or you'll go insane because you'll need to listen to it over and over and over again!!! My all time favorite hands down is They Might Be Giants ABC's. Hilarious songs and great to listen to. It won't teach him his ABC's, though! Anything by Raffi is great, but I get bored with him after a while.
The thing with handing them toys is if they drop it, they can't retrieve it. Have you tried attaching them to his carseat? I sell Discovery Toys-- we have these GREAT links (called Boomerings) that are oval shaped and skinnier than the big round ones you see in most stores, so I find them to be easier to attach to things. If you're interested in them (or any other new toy that may keep his interest), check out my website.
Oh, also, be careful handing him crackers or other snacks while you're driving due to the choking hazard. Someone once mentioned to me that 1)they choke silently so you may not even know it's happening, and 2)if you do notice it happening in your rearview mirror, you may crash freaking out and trying to find a place to pull over!

Hi J.,

My daughter is 17 months old and the only thing that entertains her is listening to her CD's. She loves to do all the hand motions to "clap your hands" and "head, shoulders, knees, and toes." Maybe try a CD of these silly songs that you two can sing together.

Good luck!!
