The FDA warns against using Orajel - I would not risk it: http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm250024.htm Seems like it would be best to try the other suggestions given first (cold wash cloth, etc.).
My 13 month old is getting is first 3 teeth all at once :( I see the bottom two and upper right one almost there. What can do to help him with the pain? How often can I give him tylenol? I gave it once yesterday night because he got very fussy and wouldn't sleep. What else helps?? He has few teethers he bites on. Also he has a cold and cough since last week and now I see rash on his chin. I read all this is related to teething - is it true?
Also, when do I start brushing his teeth now? Do I wait for it to come all the way out or do they have brushes with soft bristles for teething babies? Is Baby Orajel good for pain?? Is it safe?? Any information helps. He is my first and I am not sure what needs to be done. Thanks!

I am a mom of 5 kids (10, 8,8,8..yes, triplets, and an 13mo.old) I also am a childcare provider,....what has worked for M...Tylenol then Motrin (back & forth that way) Motrin seems to get into their system within 15-20 min, as where Tylenol takes up to 30-40 min before there is relief. I do use Oragel when first starting T or M, as if gives instant relief and lasts about 10-15 min so meds can do their work. Teething rings have never worked for M., they wouldn't leave them in their mouths or chew on them long enough so 'numb' the area. Wet, rung-out, cold wash cloths work best for M.. They love to chew on them. My mom is a dental assistant, and she said when a child is 'cutting teeth', they are feeling the same kind of pain we would if we had a root canal w/NO novicane. OUCH!! I know some people don't like to use these things, but it worked for M. and my little ones, and I'd rather have them comfortable, than in pain.
Never to early to start brushing. They make finger cots with little rubber nubbies on them made by oragel (I think) or just a wet wash cloth to wipe them off is good until they are able to "brush". All of my kids, and 90% of daycare children I've worked with have always gotten very drooly, usually a clear runny nose with it. Dr's say a 'cold' has nothing to do with teething, however, I beg to differ. With all the drool and runny nose, ear infections can also run hand & hand with it. (Drainage into the ears from ear, nose, throat being all connected). Watch for fussy/crying when he naps, bedtime, and diaper changes...pressure of laying down causes ears to hurt if there is an infection. Also won't want to eat or drink/suck as normal. Good luck to you...until all those pearly whites are in. :)
Tylenol doesn't last long for us so we use Motrin. It seems to help more. I agree, teething rings never seem to work either but the cold wet washcloth does. I've never used the Oragel but my neighbor loves it. It only works if you rub it in good though. Otherwise it just washes away. As for drooling...I just keep a good absorbent bib on him :)
My pediatrician suggested the baby oragel. I don't really like to use it though, because when my son is in teething pain the last thing he lets M. do is stick my finger in his mouth! Plus, there is so much saliva I'm not sure it would even go where it needs to and stay there long enough to help. I've given baby Motrin when it's real bad. I used to use the teething tablets, but since they've been recalled I can't find them anywhere :( Teethers help if they are real cold. Another thing that really works for us is popsicles. My son LOVES popsicles, so it distracts him from feeling bad because he gets a treat and it doubles as a pain reliever because it's frozen. Good luck!
Sounds like my kids cutting more than one at a time. My 10 month old cut his first at 2 months, now has 8 and trying to cut more. I give baby generic orajel, generic tylenol(mainly at night when really crabby), vibrating teether, sippy with cold ice water, and ice cubes in the Munchkin fresh food feeder thing. The ice cubes in the mesh bag thingy is what he loves the most. Orajel sells baby teething toothpaste with rubber finger brush. I would just use a cold wash cloth and gently wipe his gums a little 1 or 2xs a day.
Teething remedies that worked on my kids:
orajel
teething tablets (they melt when they hit saliva so great for learning to eaters)
a toothbrush (really, we go through 1 a month because of chewing on that thing and since the kids are so used to them brushing teeth is a breeze)
when all else failed:
Tylenol
Motrin
You stagger these 2 meds so that you always have one in the kids system.
Hi SK.
Congrats on your little one..
TEETHING TABLETS are great for calming him and easing that "itch".
Baby Orajel is great to numb the pain - both of these can be safely given to your baby at the same time.
Teething can be a pain literately! What do you do when you get an owie? Put ice on it.. Give him raw, refrigerated carrots to suck and bite on.. or a cold spoon, or teether toys. If you dont want to get bitten, put some orajel on a cotton swab or a toothbrush for infants and put it on gently. He might like the rubbing of the bristles against his gums and try to bite the brush.. let him...but dont let him bite on it for too long.
If you dont want to use orajel, you could freeze goghurts and let him bite on that, it is soft enough and when it melts it's yummy!! (Get the reduced fat ones)
Good luck..
There is a natural remedy called Chamomilla that works wonders! You can find it online or at natural food stores. Check it out. It is amazing!
