I was just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I have been to the endocrinologist, but still have more tests before I can get answers from him. How did it change your life, if at at?

What can I do next?

Hi!
I have hyperthyroidism too. All you have to do is take your medicine the doctor prescribes you , check your levels as often as directed and you will be fine. I was dianosed before having children. The first thing that I asked the doctor was how was this going to effect my chances of getting pregnant. She said I wouldn't get pregnant if I wasn't taking my prescription.

Well, I have three very healthy children so I have been able to keep my thyroid at the right levels. If you get pregnant, be sure to tell you OBGYN because they will need to watch your thyroid levels. Usually your dosage of the medication will go up.

I was at first sad and scared when I first found out. But, I have lived with this for the past 12 years and nothing is different except I have to remember to take my medication. Good luck!

I was diagnosed over 4 yrs ago, and its diffucult to get use to dealing w/ this... If you dont take care of yourself, your body becomes totally off balanced and its so hard to get it back on track.. As You get older it gets harder... hair lose, dry skin, & weight gain uncontrollablly.. Your symptoms will vary back and forth... I moved from hypo to hyper.. I'm learning to deal w/ my condition better and now learning to take care of my self better..You have to learn to eat right, take your medication timely, get plenty of exercise..

I've had it for 15 years. The biggest thing is learning what the right dose feels like. Do not go with generic if you can at all afford the brand name. They do not work the same, and most doctors will tell you that, although sometimes only if you ask. I think my dose (a very high one) is about $45 for a 3 month supply.

Also, check out Hashimoto's disease. Mary Shomon has done a lot of writing on it, as well as several other people whose names I don't remember. Everything I have found has been available through our library, or free interlibrary loan. Treating the Hashimoto's will keep your thyroid from continuing to worsen. GL!

I have hypothyroidism (Hashimotos) and taking my medication daily (Armour Thyroid now, I was on Synthroid at first) and having my levels measured once a year manages it nicely. My sister is hyperthyroid (Graves) and she went a long time before she was diagnosed. Her's became quite severe and she ended up having to have some surgery to deal with some bulging eye issues. She was also having the racing heart / heart palpitations, was having trouble sleeping and was always hyper and anxious. If she takes her medication daily, she's fine. Sometimes she'll go off it because she worries it's making her gain weight. When she does this you can tell because you can hear in her voice she's getting hyper again.
