How to cure pets with cherry eye?

My puggle (beagle/pug) has developed "cherry eye". My question is... have any of your pets had this and what did they have done to fix it? I will be calling the vet tomorrow but what I am reading online is that surgery needs to be done. My brother has the sister to my dog and she has had this but hers went away on its own so I am a little concerned at what this might cost us at this time with money being so tight if his doesn't go away. I have been doing warm compresses tonight and even gave him a little benadryl. Any experiences would be great!

Thanks,
M.

Summary

Some pet owners said that most pets with Cherry Eye needed surgery to recover it. Sometimes it will come and go. But you can expect it to return. It's actually a gland that is protruding. With a Pug mix you do worry about the eyes becoming irritated. Sometimes drops can help to moisten the eyes. Also if it's in one eye you shouldn't be surprised if it happens in the other. I would suggest to see your vet and have consultation.

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your input and advice. I caleld first thing this morning to get him in and then after a little while it was gone so...i won't need to take him in for now. Hopefully it won't come back. Thanks again!

M.,

I worked for a vet for 9 years and the majority of animals we saw that had Cherry Eye needed surgery to repair it. I would suggest that you see your vet and have the surgery done. Hope this helps.

If it truely is cherry eye, typically surgery is required to fix it. It is unlikely it would go away on its own. The swelling could go down if she has been rubbing at it and you don't want her to do that! The surgery is quick, and pretty routine and they recover quickly. It is pretty common in both breeds if my memory serves. I used to work at a vet (10 years), but I've been out of the business for almost a year and it's amazing the little things that you forget! Hopefully, you have a vet that is reasonable and will be willing to work with you. Ask about Care Credit if you need financing.

Hope this helps!

yes definatley take it to your vet. I do work for a vet and it can cause problems for the eye if it is rubbing. It can scratch the cornea. It is a simple tacking down of the gland. But if money is tight and if your vet says it isn't bothering th eye then you can for go the procedure til a later date. Do look into care credit. Hope all goes well..and yes don't be surprised if the other one pops out too.. Pugles...Good luck!

My mom's dog has this - and we were told by the vet that unless it is something that is hurting the dog or impeding his vision - that they will go away. It's caused by stress and some dogs are more prone to it than others. So when My mom's dog is in a stressful situation - like if she's at someone else's house for an extended period - or going to the vet - it pops back out.

Hello. Before the Surgery Option. I believe that the Vet can give you some eye Ointment or Drops with a Steroid in it. That usually makes the Cherry Eye Decrease In size. Usually If the luck

Hi M. -

Make a wash with Eyebright and give him some Eyebright tincture. The dosage is based on his weight. Let me know if you need more information.

My dog developed cherry eyes as well. The only treatment was surgery. If I remember correctly it cost around $200-300.

Hi M.! We have 2 boston terriers & one of them has a recurring cherry eye. When I notice it starting to bulge out from under his eye I just gently massage it down and it goes back where it belongs. The first time it happened I freaked out & took him to the vet who told us it is very common for the short nose breeds & that it can sometimes require surgery but not always. We also gave our dog half a benadryl when it lasted longer than one day. Usually the massage resolves the issue though. Best of luck!!

Hi M.!

This condition can sometimes get better on its own but it is rare that it happens. Surgery needs to be done to correct the issue and to ensure it does not happen in the future. Are you sure there is nothing in his eye? If there is and you could get it out it may take care of itself. good luck!
