Ok tonight I actually got to go out and hang out with my friends. A much needed get out and release from everyday life. We decided to go to the roller rink. For the first bit I was in blades, then I decided to try skates since I haven't been in them since i was 7. I nearly fell flat on my back several times!! I don't get how to skate in them! We are wanting to go back once a month since it's so much fun and I am the type to tackle a challenge and skates are one! FOR SURE! How do they work???????

What can I do next?

March in little tiny baby steps as you slightly shift your weight and you will start moving. When you get comfy take bigger steps...eventually you will be stepping and pushing off.
I can only roller skate....I have never been able to roller blade. lol.

TEHEHE, I am from the roller skating generation! My kids think I'm crazy for renting the '4 wd' skates over the inline when we go. I've TRIED the inline, but to ME, THAT'S crazy!

I'm not sure how to explain it, but I've never been able to do the in line skates without hurting myself, only the regular. Good luck! :-)

1) learn how to stand up straight in them. don't move until you can control yourself standing upright, unaided.
2) when you can finally stand, shift your weight slightly to your left foot.
3) assuming you don't fall in step 2, push your right foot gently to the back & right in a soft motion. (diagonally from your other foot) this should propel you slightly forward.
4) repeat step 3, but shift the weight to your right foot.

you can practice this at home in your bare feet. shift the weight to one foot and imagine pushing diagonally towards the back with the other foot to propel yourself. also practice standing on one foot at a time with the other leg extended. a lot of this comes down to balance, which requires good core strenghth. which is why it's easier for kids than it is adults.

Good luck & have fun!

I took roller blading lessons as an adult. Loved it! I also took ice skating lessons too until I broke my wrist. Not fun at all!

I roller skated for years in my twenties and LOVED every minute of it! One thing I could never get was the skating backwards :-\ but I could turn in a whole circle and keep going! ;)

Always keep your weight in one leg as you go, right -slide, left -slide and so on it is harder keeping your feet close together and easier to loose your balance. As you go around the turns either put one foot in front of the other (in line) or cross one foot in front of the other. Hmm, hard to tell if this makes sense! The only other trick I can share is when you fall try to do it in a rolling fashion, the second you feel it coming try to add some movement in that direction, it hurts a lot less then the straight down :)
Good luck!! and have fun!
