How Old Was Your Child When They Asked How Babies Are Made?

This is really more a fun question but I was curious at what age they asked and what they thought the answer was. My son, who is 4 1/2 just asked me tonight. We don't have other children so there was really no reason to ask before this. He has a very cute idea that babies were made on a conveyer belt where they had their voices put in, then then went through a tunnel which put them into the mommy's belly for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks a slingshot shot the baby out of the mother's belly.

What can I do next?

My son was 2 1/2 years old. It completely shocked me at the time. His older brother was pretty interested about that age also. I have very inquisitive kids and they want to know how everything works, why, etc.

We recently told my four-year-old son that I am pregnant, so of course he had questions. I was prepared (somewhat) for them - until he asked where the baby comes out. I had not meant to get too anatomical at that point - but really had no other answer than, "my vagina." Turns out what he really wanted to know was where the baby will be born - i.e., the hospital. Sigh. I am just waiting for his preschool teachers to tell me about him sharing this newly found wisdom with his classmates.

Hilarious story. That one is definitely a keeper. My son asked out of the clear blue sky when he was about 6 years old. I nearly crashed the car. His question was, did his dad and I have sex to have him? I was driving and had to really focus on where I was going instead of checking the rear view mirror to look at his little face. I did give him some particulars once we safely got home and I composed myself.

He did know about sex because we have pets. LOL. I still laugh at that story and he is 18 and in college now.

I was telling my husband about a co-worker that just found out she was pregnant and my 6 year old overheard and asked "Who's pregnant?!" When I told her it wasn't me she asked how people got pregnant anyways. We dodged the subject honestly because I wasn't completely prepared and it was almost bedtime. Maybe next time she asks. :)

Age 2, shortly after learning to talk! I told him they grow in their mommy's belly and left it at that.

my son was always very interested about where HE came from, since age 3 or so, because we pass by the hospital pretty often and i'm all sentimental like that, so he has heard me many times, "there's the hospital where you were booorn!" lol. his questions usually center around how he came into the world. he knows that babies grow in mommies' bellies - but at 6 he still hasn't figured out there is a starting point to all of that lol.

our biggest challenge so far has been him asking "well how did i get out of there?" - i have told him that doctors TOOK him out, and that's pretty much where we stopped. we had a c-section so i didn't want to scare him. we haven't gotten into the "sex" stuff, or the "babies coming out DOWN THERE" stuff yet lol. i haven't sat him down for any kind of big "talk" - just answered questions as he's had them.

haha! What an imaginative child!

I got age-appropriate variations of the question many times before my oldest daughter really pegged me down on the mechanics of it when she was 7. I was always able to satisfy her curiosities with "God put the baby in the Mommy's tummy" or something like that. Then, when she was 7, she wasn't having any more of that, and I knew she was ready to hear the basics of sex. So, I told her, and she handled it really well.

My youngest daughter, now 5, has never asked. She's much more introverted and less inquisitive than her sister. I'm 39 weeks pregnant now, and still haven't gotten any questions, so I'm planning to strike up a conversation with her about it when the time is right (she can't be tired or hungry or busy or distracted, or she won't talk lol).

Too funny!

My oldest started getting curious when she was about 4-5. I gave her just a fluff answer at that time. I had to get more detailed when she was 7 and I was pregnant for the third time. She wanted to know how the baby got in my tummy. I got a couple of books and we sat down and discussed.

He asked at age 4 1/2, when his brother turned 1. He had no ideas on how though. I laughed at your son's slingshot. Kids can be creative!

that is cute!

our kids understand that the baby is in the moms belly and the daddy puts it there after they are married. God helps with this process. We asked our son how the baby gets out of the belly and he said at the hospital. We adjust to there age. More info will follow when they are older.

That is super cute. My 8 year old knows everything down to the sex part because he is very scientific and can "handle" the information. He has known since about 6 months ago.
