How Old Is "Too Old" for Crib

Hi moms,

My son is 27 months old and he loves his crib. It is a nice convertable crib and he sleeps on the lowest setting. He has never tried to climb out and he sleeps extremely well. I noticed a lot of moms are transitioning to a regular bed around this time. I would like to keep my son in his crib as long as possible since he likes it and I sleep better knowing he is safe in his bed. Is there any harm in keeping him there? What is the advantage to going to a full size bed? And how old is too old and why?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

oh WOW! Thank you so much for validating what we are doing! I assumed that I would get at least 1 "he's getting to old" answer, but I really appreciated all the feedback and we are definetly going to keep him in there until like one mom said, he is showing signs of not being comfortable any more.

I say, never wake a sleeping baby.Keep him cozy and safe in his crib until he tries to climb out or stops sleeping through the night, which tells you he is no longer comfortable. When you do make the switch to a bed, make him part of the fun and excitement. If you can potty train first, you'll extend the life of the mattress, too.

Our pediatrician's advice was to keep them in the crib as long as it's safe (in other words, they're not trying to climb out). Our daughter is 26 months and as happy as can be in hers, so we're keeping her there for now.

Our son wasn't trying to escape, but we moved him at 2.5 to put his sister in. BIG MISTAKE!!!! He's now 4 and has only stayed in his bed all night a handful of times.

As long as the crib is the safest place for him to be, I'd keep him there. Once they're in a bed, it's much harder to contain them in one space.

My son is 2 1/2 and I'm keeping him in his crib as long as possible. He went through a phase around 18 months where he wanted to climb out, but I just kept saying "Be careful you might get an owie." He understands now that he could get hurt [he even says "don't fall" while dropping his Spiderman from the rails] and he hasn't even tried to climb out since. EVERYONE I've talked to tells me how awful it is when they can get out of bed at night. If he is happy, why put yourself through another round of sleep deprivation? I personally lost enough sleep for the first two years!
I would say keeping him in the crib is fine until it's not safe anymore

HI Beata,

My kids never slept in a crib. I slept in mine til I was four.....It's a bed. There's no magic number. When he's old enough for friends to come over and tease him it's soon enough. That'll be a while!

My son will be 3 in August and he still sleeps in his crib. I think as long as he doesn't climb out and he is comfortible then why change a good thing. He has a friend that we do playdates with that has a full size bed and my son has never once asked about the difference.

So for now he will stay in his crib.

Good Luck!

I can't wait for other's responses. : )

My son sleeps great in his crib and prefers it to anything else. He'll be 2 next month.

I think it's fine until they either weigh too much (crib limit) or they just don't like it anymore. So I don't really think it has anything to do with age... More the height and weight.

As long as he fits and is within the weight limit, I'd leave him be personally. I know a number of children who were in their crib until well into their "2's".

I think you should keep him in there as long as he's happy and you're happy. Once he's potty trained, you may need to switch beds so he can go in the middle of the night on his own.

My son's 24 months and we just transitioned him two days ago because he was climbing into his crib head first -didn't want to wait till he tried climbing out head first.

We kept kiddo in his crib until he was 3ish

Then we moved into a full sized bed... which we LOVE. For story tiime, nightmares, reading, forts, etc.

My son is much younger so we're not questioning the crib ordeal right now.. but wanted to add that I know a lady who kept her son in his crib until he was abou 3 1/2 because otherwise it was just a three ring circus at night. I say if he's happy and still safe in it (weight limits and all that stuff) then stick with it. If it isn't broken, don't fix it! I wouldn't worry about it until he reaches the weight limits or is trying to climb out.
