Quick question nursing moms--how many times a day are you nursing your 9 month olds? When? Are you giving anything to drink with food? If so, what? Just making sure I am on the right track! Thanks!

What can I do next?

4-6 times a day, maybe more. I nursed on demand and nursed her every 3-4 hours around the clock, as needed, until she was 12 months. At 9 months, she would have a little bit of cereal in the afternoon and a little bit of dinner with the rest of the family, as she liked. But, her main source of nutrition was still breastmilk til she was 12 months of age.

4 times a day. My doctor told me at that age, the baby should be eating 3 meals, (always eating solid food first, then nursing,) and a 4th nursing session at bedtime. That's what we did, and our son really thrived. Hope this helps!

Andrea:

nurse first offer food when you are eating....

we all eat/drink many more than 3-4 times a day... expect your child to do so also...

eating is a much a social activity as a nutritional one.

Sometimes I feel like it is a lot of the day. My son is 9 1/2 months, eating three meals a day (all on table food now). Sometimes we offer him water with meals or some expressed milk in a cup. I nurse still once in the evening ( really early morning), usually after breakfast, then 2-3 more times before bed. When I have to work for the day, he will go alot longer. He is not too interested in the bottle, better with the cup. I agree with some other posts that I tend to nurse more on demand. He seems to be doing fine.

Andrea,
I nursed both of my boys until they were around 14 months old. I never really counted how many times I nursed in a day. It is kind of a gut instinct thing. I know for sure I would nurse when they woke up in the morning and before they went to bed. In between those two times, it just depends on how they day goes, and if you are out and about. Trust your own instinct. Sometimes, when my breast would feel full, I would nurse them just to get relief.

I nurse my daughter (8 months) three times a day. Once at 630AM, 1pm, and 8pm (bed time). She eats solids 2-3 times a day. If she wants to nurse more of course I let her. If I try to nurse her when I know she's not ready she will throw it up so I have to be careful not to overstuff her.

At that age, I was nursing 4 times a day, every 5 hours. At each feeding, I would nurse, then feed, so nursing was always primary. Can offer a cup of water with or after the food for introducing the cup.
