My SIL bought my niece a tutu dress with a crochet top for her first birthday to wear around at the party. It is very cute and has wings and a halter top ribbon to keep it up. My SIL paid $80 for it and I was wanting to get my daughter one but I wouldn't pay $80 for one by any means. I started looking up how to make them and wow is it easy. I am going to make one and see how it goes. If it goes well I am thinking about maybe making them and selling them on the side for a little extra money. How much would you pay for one? Here is a link of something that I am talking about.

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your opinions. If I ended up selling them it wouldn't be many. More of a special order item from word of mouth. And to her spending $80 yes she actually did. I asked numerous other family members that talk to her more and she bought it through someone through her church.

Well, it's not really my style, so I can't necessarily say too much, but when I'm buying something for a special occassion or something like that I would probably pay $30-40 tops. If it was for something to just wear whenever, where ever, I wouldn't pay over probably $20-25.

They are easy to make, I've made and sold several. But, quite time consuming, and the more expensive ones usually have finer detail and better quality fabrics and lots and lots of tulle for a very full skirt. The cheaper ones that are usually for the crafty moms that are knotted tulle like the one you linked, don't tend to hold up as well as the boutique quality ones. Also, those crochet pieces can be bought for super cheap too.

Something like this... now that is high quality worth a higher price tag:

So be sure to do your research. On Etsy, that particular style ranges between $20 and $45. Scroll through the listings, you can tell which ones are better made and poofier and note the price difference:

I know so many people that make them...they are very simple and as soon as people figure it out they try to start selling them. Not saying it's a bad idea, just beware that lots of people do it.

I generally won't pay more than $20 for an outfit my daughters may wear only a couple of times, however I know there are relatives who have paid up to $40 for outfits for my kids. I don't dress them up often. I would rather be laid back about what they get into than concerned for their clothes.

Just bought a tutu looking skirt for $12 at Target...buy a leotard for $10 and we already have wings......so $22...

My daughter however won't wear those items together! tutu skirt with a cute pink shirt tonight for the Father/Daughter dance the high school band is sponsoring.

I don't like the top part...so I wouldn't buy it at all. And tu-tu dresses are all around now...you don't have to pay $80.

oooo Take your link down and put it in the so what happened section so it doesn't get pulled by Mamapedia.

I wouldn't price it more than $15 or $20.

Thats so cute and would lovely on my daughter!! Umm 80 is a lil steep fir me, but 30-40 is reasonable imo. Charge less than half of what ut is in the store and I bet you sell them! I like it! Let me know...

We paid $25 for a tutu at a Greek Festival. We were there, the tutu was there, she wanted it, and we had the money in our pocket.

I think I would have bribed her with an ice cream if it had been $80.

My daughter plays in her tutu and used to wear it to dance.

Very cute! I would pay someone to make it $50 dollars at most. Looks easy to make.

I don't know... the crochet top seems a bit too adult for a little girl. DD's not really a '"tutu" type of kid, so I've never bought anything like that. I can't imagine spending 80 on something that seems relatively simple to make, and something that's so easily ruined & grown out of, especially for such a young kid. If I did buy something like that, I would probably not spend more than $25, honestly.

Did she tell you she paid $80? or was there a tag or receipt? Seems pretty steep.

Cute..

I could see in some specialty shops, maybe $40. Retail.. but if you are going to sell them to stores. the wholesale cost will need to be less than $20..
