How Much Whole Milk Does a Typical 1 Year Old Drink?

I have recently started the transition from formula to whole milk. So far this has not been a problem. My son loves drinking from the sippy cup and will drink 2 to 2 1/2 cups (these are 7 ounce cups) of whole milk a day. He also eats solids very well and I am lucky that he is not a picky eater. We have recently started skipping the morning and afternoon bottle and he does not seem to miss them. He still gets one 8 ounce bottle of formula before bed. Now that the formula is going away, about how much milk should he be drinking a day? How much water? Just looking for infomation on what other 1 year olds are drinking.

Hi A.!
I recently had my daughter's one year dr. appt. and asked him this same question. He said no more than 24 oz. of whole milk a day. I typically give my daughter a sippy cup of milk with breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack (totaling around 18-20 oz., on average) and then a sippy cup of water with dinner. It seems to be working well for us.
Good luck!

16oz should be enough. cheese, yogurt also count. for example, if he takes 12oz whole milk, and 4oz yogurt, then he gets enough dairy for that day.

I've also been told about 18 to 20 ounces for a 1 year old -or at least 4 servings for calcium per day. By 2.5 years of age, my daughter was (is) down to 2 glasses of milk a day, but with cheese or yogurt - still equal to about 15 to 16 ounces a day (which is the minimum it should be for their calcium intake).

I've read through the responses so far and it appears to depend on your pediatricial. Mine said no more than 24oz per day of whole milk. Check with your doctor to see what they recommend.

Increase the sippy to 4-5 times a day. He doesn't need a bottle in bed. Less drink in his sippy at bedtime will help him hold his peepee during the night (making your next step of potty training easier). Don't forget he gets other sources of vitamen D in his foods. Also, going to bed with the formula eventually rotts the baby teeth. The younger he is the easier to get him off that bottle.

My son always loved to drink milk! He's 8 now and still drinks about 3 8oz glasses a day. I was concerned with the hormones and now give him organic.

Just some food for thought!

Sounds like you are doing well with 2-3 sippy cups a day. You shouldn't need a night time bottle at all anymore if he drinks well out of the sippy it's a great time to ditch the bottle. My almost 1 year old loves her sippy's and hasn't had a bottle in over a month :)

16 to 20 oz is the ideal, no more then 20 oz though. The reason for this has to do with them not wanting food for calories if they get too much milk, and the milk inhibiting iron absorption. You can water down his milk if you want in order to stretch it so he still can drink as much.

Our doctor told us 16 oz is plenty. There are also substitutions.
For example:
1 ounce yogurt =1 ounce milk, I slice of deli American cheese=4 ounce milk(It may be 2 ounces, I can't remember).

Good Luck!!

my ped said not more than about 20 ounces a day and as much water as he wants. They are very holistic and she said as long as he is getting lots of fruits and veggies, he won't need more milk than this. Now, my son would drink 50 ounces a day if I let him but he is okay with the 20 and water for the rest of the day. I usually only give him the milk when he gets up and at meals.

Ask your doctor. Ours said 18oz. If they have too much milk they could become anemic, it can stop the absorbtion of iron.

I just give my daughter milk when she wants it, and with her meals. I also give her water with her snacks. I have no clue how much of any of it she is drinking, but I don't worry about it. I figure she will get what she needs.
