We moved from Dallas to Houston. We boxed everything up, they broke down beds, set them back up etc. 3 guys on both ends. The total bill was $1200 and we tipped them $100. My two cents...
I've hired a moving company for a long distance move. I have a 2 bedroom. I'll be packing my own stuff. They will be breaking down beds and setting them up in addition to the loading and unloading. There will be 3 guys at pick-up and 2 guys at drop off. I was told that it will take 2 hours to load my stuff. (originally with 2 guys, now with 3 @ pickup) There aren't stairs here but will be at my destination. I received an estimate based on 5,000 pounds and they will be driving approximately 17 hours.
They'll be here first thing in the morning for pick up. I'll have plenty of water available and maybe some donuts or bagels. I'll have drinks and breakfast or lunch available at the destination. I've googled how much to tip and it's all over the place. I've heard of percentages, per hour for labor, or flat rate per guy. I'll be tipping twice, once for the loaders and once for the unloaders. Please give me suggestions on how much to tip each person. Thanks for any advice and/or insight!!
Thanks, everyone!
Jim, I'm assuming you paid $100 for the round trip? Since I'll have 3 @ pickup and 2 @ delivery I had planned to tip two different times. So, 1/2 in the beginning and 1/2 at the end? I'm thinkin more for the delivery since there will only be 2 guys and there are stairs involved? I know I'm overthinking this but I don't want to tip too little and I usually tend to over tip, which is ok when we're talking about lunch but not so much with this. ha!

I gave a $20 plus food and drinks, so $10 each way???
I recently moved and had 4 men/two trucks. I provided ice cold water, granola bars, and tipped 25$ each. They ate lunch on the way from one house to the other and clocked out $30 minutes for that.
In all of my moves - we were military - we never tipped the guys.
We provided a cool environment - kept the thermostat low - drinks, breakfast and lunch...the crews we had loved it. We didn't just run to McDonald's or ordered pizza...we gave them a menu to order from. They were NOT expecting a tip.
When my girlfriend moved two summers ago - she tipped the crew $100 after they were done. It was August and REALLY hot. Like me, she kept the AC low so it was cool for them and provided lunch and drinks.
Did you call the company and ask what the typical tip was or if it was allowed?
