How Much to Tip? - Raleigh,NC

Hi,
I went and got my hair done yesterday and spent a fortune. I always leave a "tip" but this time I didn't want to leave as much because I had already spent way over what I had intended. I just don't know what to tip a stylist because it's not like they are a waitress that makes minimum wage and works for tips. I usually tip 20% at a restaurant, but what is appropriate to tip? I have this trouble when I go to get my nails done (which is rare)as well. I just think you are already spending so much money...15-20% seems like a lot extra for a service especially when it's hard enough spending the money on yourself and not on something "important" for the kids or house.

What can I do next?

L.,
Being that I used to do hair for a living I can tell you that the standerd percentage of tipping is 15%. This includes any type of personal service you recieve, restaurants, pizza delivery etc. It doesn't matter how much the initial service costs or if the owner of the salon does your hair. Proper etiquette is still 15%. Some stylists get paid commision and by the hour which isn't always a lot so they really do rely on those tips. You could try to see if certain salons have specials to save a little that way. At JCPenney's they usually have a perm sale or color sale which helps you save a little. Some of the nail shops can be good for getting manicures and pedicures but be careful. Even though some may be cheaper, they lack in cleanliness and sanitizing of their instruments. It's a good idea to ask around to see where other moms go too. HTH! C.

Hi L., I usualy tip at least 10% to the hairdresser. Some say you don't need to if they are the owner ... but I still do.

Congratulations on getting your Master's degree! I also have a M.S. However, like you, my kids are the priority and so I am staying home with them ... even when they are both in school I want to be home when they are done.

I always try and tip 20% but I believe that 15% is the lowest you should go. They have spent a lot of time on you to give you the best they can. You need to let them know that you appreciate that. They also live off of their tips. I would say at least 15% is customary.

What...Are you kidding me ? If your not going to give your hairdresser a good tip, 20% - UP then dont expect any Favor's ,,,, no early booking's, no staying late, no extra conversation ..... Hairstylist work very hard to make the best out of you, and use there knowledge and expertise on what they learn with extra classes, but you'll still get a great service, because its there work that goes out the door, and it's totally is a service, if you like your stylist, you should show her or him...just how much you like the hair cut, color, or nails... hope this shed's light on u

I am so glad you asked!!!! I always wonder about that too. It was good to hear from the other mom who worked in the field to get that side of the story. I plan to do 15% from now on.
