$100 is a pretty appropriate gift, especially if it's someone you are close to. A lot of people spend the same amount on a bar mitzvah gift that they would spend on a wedding gift.
Have fun!

Hello! We are going to a Bar Mitzvah this weekend, both myself and my husband. The mother is a good friend of mine. What is the going rate to give these days? We live in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago ( Buffalo Grove). Thanks!

Hi $100 seems a little high to me, but not outrageous. I just wanted to tell you (in case you're not jewish) that gifts in multiples of $18 are especially nice. In hebrew, letters also serve as numbers (like Roman numerals) and the number 18 corresponds with the word "life." So giving 18+18+18+18 is a nice gift. Have fun.
hi there
we usually give $25 per person....so in our case, that would have meant 50...
BUT most recently, we up the anty to $100 as the friend of ours was closer to us.
We are going this weekend and giving $100, but it is all up to how much you want and can afford.
I think anything less than $50, unless you truly can't afford it is a bit low.
