16-24 oz. I didn't see anyone mention this...they need whole milk. The fat is necessary for brain development.
Does anyone know how much cow's milk a 1 year old should be getting? Is it equivalent to the amount of formula my son was getting before switching him to cow's milk? Of course, this is the one question I forgot to ask at his 1 year appointment. Thanks in advance for your help!
Thanks for everyone's responses! My son seems to be getting plenty of milk and even more calcium than his daily requirement. I feel a lot better now--I can feel guiltless on this issue!! ;-)

Jacquline,
The focus switches from "milk" to Calcium at this stage. He needs approx 500 mg oc Calcium/day from ages 1-3. From 4-8 years that increases to 800mg and from 9-13 it goes up to 1300mg/day.
Anyway, a cup (8oz) of milk provides approx 300mg of Calcium. A slice of American Cheese is approx 175 mg and 1 slice of Iron kids Bread is 160 mg- so a Grilled Cheese could cover the whole requirement. There is also Calcium fortified orange Juice, Waffles, and breakfast cereal. Plus at a year he can now eat all dairy products- yogurts, cheese slices, etc...
Hope this helps!
Oh! I really really recommend the book " Guide to Your Child's Nutrition" available at www.AAP.Org it covers nutritional requirements for every age group, gives serving sizes, snack ides.... LOVE IT!

(wearing my Pedi RN hat as I type this response)
I just looked on a handout my ped. gave me & it says 16 oz. between 1-2 years of age. But I agree about the calcium requirement & would focus on that instead of the actual amount of milk intake. Of course I say this as I am trying to wean my almost 1 year old & introduce milk.

Just asked my pediatrician yesterday she said around 16oz. Or 12 oz plus a yogurt or cheese or something.

hi
i think the actual milk suggestion is 24-32 oz a day
Jen
I am pretty sure is 24 ounces. Too much milk can interwith eating, vitamin absorption and stool consistancy.

Hi Jacqueline: From what I've been told (I have an 11.5 mo. old), he should be getting 3-5 servings of dairy a day. So, you'd have to figure out how much a serving of "milk" is, and then add on any other dairy products he is having. I think it actually comes out to be allot more milk than I thought.

My aim was 16-24 oz for my son at 1.
I totally agree w/Debi. I also want to add that you just need to focus on the calcim the dairy and not so much the milk.
My son drinks not that much in a cup maybe a total of 3-4 oz (if that)a day but in a bottle will drink a total of 10 and is decreasing as well, he is weaning himself off of it.
Good Luck and I hope this helps.

One thing no one seemed to mention is that they still need a good supply of iron after turning one. I've had friends who's baby became anemic because of a lack of iron. Formula has a lot of iron and whole milk does not. Just be sure your son gets a good source of iron. I've kept my son on toddler formula since he turned one. Iron is important for their growth (physical and brain), so don't forget about it. If anything, make sure he takes a good vitamin with iron.
i'm going to my daughter's one year appointment in about half an hour and was going to ask the same question.
i see you got plenty of responses, but here's my doctor's 2 cents. he said that, even though she is only getting about 6 oz of milk, she is fine. he's more on the earthy side on most issues and said not to worry about it and that we are one of the few cultures that drinks milk beyond infancy. his thought is that it just isn't necessary. plus, my daughter eats at least one serving of yogurt a day and one serving of cottage cheese, so i'm not going to stress about it. good luck!
