How Much Liquid for a 1 Year Old

I recently took my 1 year old to the doctor for her 1 yr check up. She was still taking 4 or 5 bottles a day and small amounts of solids. He said to get her off the bottle (except for 1 at night) quickly. So, I basically just took it away from her and started trying whole milk in a cup. She won't drink it!! She will drink water out of a cup, but I don't know that she is getting enough. How do I know if she is getting enough to drink?

What can I do next?

hi K., i am a mother of 3, i used to have the same problem with my 15 year old daughter when se was little.. the dr. told me to take her off the bottle at 1 year..well my daughter wasnt going to hear of that she cried all the time until i couldnt stand it...so what i did i talked to my mother and the advice i got has helped many children that has come into my home get off the bottle. babies arnt cut out of the same molds. they r all unique in many different ways they walk and talk different times in life...so well i gave jessica back her bottle and within 2 months she threw it out the car window and never asked for it again so my advice to u is u know ur baby better than anyone in the world u know how she drinks and eats so give her a chance to get rid of the bottle herself dont worry she wont be going to prek still sucking a bottle. lots of luck God bless S.

I have a 15 month old daughter and I had the same problem. She refused to drink milk from a sippy cup. She would drink water with no problem, so I knew it wasn't the cup. I tried buying her a special cup just for her milk, but she wasn't having any of that. Honestly, the only thing that really worked for me was to let her sip milk from a regular cup. I would just use a small plastic cup and pour a little at a time into her mouth. It was pretty messy, but she would drink it that way and at least I felt like she was drinking some milk. My pediatrician suggested going "cold turkey" and only giving her milk (no water) to drink, but I had the same concern you did in that she just wasn't really drinking anything. So, I gave up on that for awhile and just let her drink the milk out of the regular cup. I tried the "cold turkey" thing again about a month ago and it worked this time. I guess she was just used to the taste of the milk by then, so she didn't mind anymore. She actually even prefers the milk sometimes. So, I would just recommend trying the regular cup and giving her some time to get used to that and try again in a month or so.

Good luck!

I am a mother of two children. I think as long as you are getting at least 10 wet diapers a day she is getting plenty of fluids. My doctor always told me that if my son wouldn't drink the milk make sure he gets calcium another way. Believe it or not ice cream is good for them. My son loves cheese so thats where he gets most of his.also if you just took her off of the bottle sometimes if you get the nuby sippy cups with the soft top thoses tend to work because they are almost like a nipple.
