Hi,

My oldest is in her first year of preschool and I'm wondering how much is appropriate for her teacher (and the teacher's assitant) gifts? They do equal work - I was thinking of gettig them each a mani/pedi near the school? With tip that's around 40-45. Is that too much? I could split it with my friend who's kids are also in the class if it is...I feel completely illiterate in this matter :-)

What can I do next?

As a teacher, I would say the sky's the limit! JK! I think 45 is a bit high, but a mani/pedi is a great idea. You could go halves with someone. A gift card to starbucks, the teacher store, target is always great. IMO, no magnets, mugs, ornaments!

I think a mani/pedi is a wonderful idea but it is a lot to spend on a teacher's gift. You may want to go with just one of those things. I am not sure of the guidelines for a center. I know that a few years ago there was a list in one of the parenting magazines about appropriate tipping at holiday times. In a daycare home it suggested a gift of the amount of one weeks care. Which to me was a lot higher than I could afford to spend on gifts. Something always appreciated though having been a daycare provider in the past is a gift certificate to anywhere. food, hair, grocery store etc. always useful and always appreciated. my mom still does daycare and she loves the gift certificates for going out. movies, plays etc.

Quite honestly, give whatever you'd like to give. I'm a teacher and I would like the $5 gift card just as much as I would a manicure/pedicure. It really is the thought that counts.

Very generous gift, however, you have another child just behind so don't set that bar too high unless you are really dealing with an extraordinary teacher. You will still be purchasing an end of the year present too. I would say $15 - $20 is generous - going in with a friend and spending $40 would make a lovely present.

I've been a room mom many times. Something that I have always done is a "class gift". It really helps with expenses and still gives the teacher a very generous present. By requesting that people donate $5 - $10 (if people aren't giving another gift, they;ll give the $10; if they are already buying something small, many times they will give $5). For many parents and children, it's important to them to make sure that the teacher knows that they "bought" part of that gift (never listing how much their donation was!) so make sure they know up-front that they will sign a teacher's card or what I do is, in your request letter, include a label that they can sign and you will stick in the card.

Good luck.

I am a daycare provider and would love to receive a mani/pedi
gift card. It depends on your situation, and what you can afford, and how much you think of the teacher involved. The teacher will be happy you thought of her, whether the gift is extravegent, or inexpensive. The choice is yours. Spend what you feel in your heart is right! Have a Merry Christmas!

It depends on what your feel comfortable. I have been a family daycare provider for almonst 19 years. Over the years I have received anywhere from an ornament to $300.00 for Christmas. Of course it is a little different because I am with the children form 7:30 to 5:00 five days a week.It is always the thought not the amount that counts though. One of my favorite gifts was a bucket full of Diet Coke with a gift card to McDonalds. Anyone that knows me, knows how much I love McDonald's Diet Coke. Another great gift was cupcake pans. When my children were younger I was always making cupcakes for their school. Gift cards are great. I love your idea though. I would never spend to have my nails done but if someone gave me a gift card I would love it.
