How Much Formula Should I Be Giving My Son?

My son is soon to be 2 months old and I just switched to formula this past week... Maybe the week before. When I was breast feeding when I was around him, and giving him formula when I couldn't be there he would only drink 2 or 4 ounce bottles. However, now that I am only giving formula he'll want between 5 and 6 ounces at a time! If I stop at 4, he'll cry and cry and cry until I give in and give him more. I refuse to give him anymore than 5 because when I do he ends up vomiting, but sometimes he'll continue to cry and act as though he wants more when his 5 ounces are gone. My future MIL thinks that even 5 ounces is way too much for his age, but I'm only giving him what he wants and trust me, he will let me know when he doesn't want anymore. He'll turn his head away, and lock his lips up tight.

So how much formula should I really be giving him? Is it okay to give him 5 ounces, if he wants it? Or should I be giving him less? If so, how much?

Also, he will go 2 to 4 hours without eating when he gets that much. So it's not like I'm giving him that much every hour.

My boyfriend thinks that our son is just trying to catch up because men in both of our families are very big, but our son was born fairly small (6lbs 12oz).

I will be asking my home health nurse about this when I see her tomorrow, and my son's doctor about this when we go in for his 2 month check up on the 30th but I just wanted a little early advice.

What can I do next?

as much as he needs. kids grow at diffrent rates my youngest was a little pig. I would mix 4 oz of cereal and give him it mixed in formula every 30 minutes to 2 hrs but he was in a size 5 by 18 months and was not fat.

Give him as much as he wants. Just think if you were hungry, you'll eat until you're full right? Do the same for your baby. I always let my kids eat until they were full and they are not overweight by any means. He's probably going through a growth spurt and they tend to eat more then. I dont know how much my youngest ate at 2 months because I was breastfeeding. But I do remember I pumped my milk when he was 1 month old and got out 5-6 ounces, so I guess he ate 5-6 every 3 hours at one month old. Don't stress too much about it. Boys are little piggies. Trust me, I know I have 2! Good luck!

Not too much at all. Gave all three of my kids formula and they were chow hounds!!!!!!! If 5 oz too much back off to 4 to 4 1/2 so he doesn't vomit. I would put a passi in his mouth after he was done because I think at the end it was more comofort than still hungry. Vomitting a definite sign he's had a bit too much. He could be going through a growth spurt in which he would want to eat more. You'll find he'll be hungrier at times than others.

Babies are supposed to naturally know when to stop eating. Supposedly overeating is a learned habit. It is easier for babies to get milk out of bottles than nipples so that might be why he's drinking more but as long as he's not throwing it up, you should give him however much he wants. 5 oz doesnt sound like a big deal. I always thought my son was drinking too much formula, and then when he was older, eating too much food b/c my son LOVES food but the dr would always say that he wasn't overweight so let him have what he wants as long as its healthy.

At his age you need to feed on demand and let him have his full. At two months, his feeding should be about every four hours. If he wants more but more means he is vomitting, he may just need to be burped more often (like every 2-4 oz) and let him be a bit upright for a few minutes after he finishes.

My son had increased to 8 oz and regressed to every two hours by two weeks! While definately not the norm, it was perfectly acceptable because that is what his body needed. My daughter on the other hand was probably two months old (or older) before she took 8 oz at one time.

I think my kids had 4 oz at that age so one more oz doesn't sound unreasonable to me. You are right about not giving him more than 5 if he's throwing it up. Here's a link that might help you determine what amount is right for your baby.

My son is 19 weeks old and we just started giving him 5-6 oz. Our rule of thumb is that I always fixed more than what I think he is going to eat. If he doesn't want it he won't eat it, but if he does he will. We also started giving food and cereal three times a day due to him spitting up all the formula/milk he was drinking. He was 7 lbs and 1/2 oz at birth. Hope this helps.

Babies kind of have that built-in overflow valve!
If he handles 5 oz., then give him the 5.

According to Similac and Enfamils feeding guides a 2 month old can eat anywhere from 20-30 oz a day, 3-5 oz at a time every 3-4 hours. At 6 wks my daughter is now drinking 4. If he is continually fussy and spitting up alot you may want to look into other causes of the crying..ie, reflux, allergies, etc.

5 oz is not too much to feed a 2 month old at all...very normal. Our now 2 year old was eating at least that much at 7 weeks old...

Good luck
