How Much Formula Is Too Much??

Hello everyone -- I just weened my son off of my breast and now he's eating soo much more. He is 4 weeks this week and is drinking anywhere from 3 1/2 to 4 ounces of formula. Is that normal or is it too much?? I know this may seem like a silly question but my firstborn never ate this much at 4 weeks -- he would barely finish off 2 ounces.

What can I do next?

Yes, It is normal unless he is spitting up a lot or close to the same amount of what he takes is.
They will eat until they are full.

good Luck!

You need to direct this kind of question to your babies Dr. It might be no big deal.

Hi L.,

No, it is not a silly question. My daughter is five weeks old and she is on straight formula since two weeks of age. She is eating 3 1/2 - 4 ounces every two hours. So, we both may be abnormal. :) My pediatriation said to let her eat until she is finished and I do. I think you are in good shape. Let your precious son eat what he wants.

It is normal. They will eat till they are full. If he keeps eating then he is fine. Don't worry. He's just a growing boy.

Our Ped told me to work it out as follows:

Babies weight (lbs) X 2.5 = minimum amount of Formula per day

and

Babies weight (lbs) X 3.0 = maximum amount of Formula per day

Hope that helps

They say babies need 2-1/2 ounces of formula per day per pound of weight. So take 2/1-2 times how much your baby weighes; this would equal the total amount of formula they should be taking in. Divide the total ounces of formula per day by the number of feedings to determine approximately how much they should be drinking per feeding. Hope this makes sense.

No I don't think that's too much at all. She will eat until she is full. Also, when I nursed I always had a hard time knowing how much milk I was producing so maybe she's been drinking this much the whole time! When I switched to formula my daughter was eating 6-8 oz. before I knew it. And she's totally average in size.

HI L.,
I am a Pedi RN-
Babies should take no more than 32 oz in a 24 hour period. He may be going through a growth spurt right now and will level off in a bit :-)

I went through the same thing with my son. The nurses at the hospital were laughing at how much he was drinking even before we left. When I got home, he kept eating more and more. I even called my peditrician wondering if I was giving him too much. (I was afraid of him drowning.) :)

Everyone told me he'd eat what he needs and they were right. Your little guy is just fine!
