How Much for Summer Babysitter?? Clueless!

I've previously used a daytime camp program for my 6 yr old son but this summer we want to continue his academic progress so I've asked around & the student teacher from his kinder class has expressed an interest to watch him 4 days a week (7:30-4:30) and work with him at home on his reading/writing. She will also do things like take him to the pool, etc.
How much would I pay this person?? What's the going rate??

YMCA is $150 a week & includes all meals and a field trip (Six Flags, Waterpark, etc.) We'll probably do that for a couple of weeks in the summer just to break things up for him. Is that about the same that we would pay the teacher??

Also - I have a FT private babysitter for my 17 month old. If the student teacher wants to keep both of them (she said she wants to) how much would I pay for both kids vs. just the 6 yr old??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Why do schoolwork in the summer?
It's not to get ahead, it's to catch up!! We've recently received a formal diagnosis of dyslexia so he's just beginning to understand using the new teaching techniques and concepts.
He's much behind his classmates, but would not benefit from repeating Kinder as they do not offer dyslexia counseling at this early age at his school. Therefore, it's up to us- his parents, to advocate on his behalf, to be proactive, and to support him in his learning.

He is a tender hearted boy & he recognizes his difference. He has called himself "stupid" and school is not a happy place for him.
Who, of all parents wouldn't try to help their child through this?

I own a babysitting service in the nix area. Avg cost of babysitter in Texas is $12/hr for 1 and $14/hr for two. Iths is strictly sitting. If you are wanting other stuff added like more of a nanny roll its 16/18

I'd ask her what her rate is. She probably has a good idea of what she wants/needs to make.

Lets break it down.
$150 a week is $37.50 a day.
$37.50 a day divided by 9 hours in the day is $4.17 an hour.
That's not even minimum wage.
YMCA is so cheap because there is 1 chaperone for about 10 kids. Your son would be getting one on one time along with tutoring.
AND if she is watching both of the kids you need to pay her more.
If I were her I would take no less than $15 an hour.
(15 x 9hours = $135 x 4days = $540 a week)
That's a LOT! if you are not willing to pay that much then I think that you need to find some families that you can trade watching children with or ask your family to help you out. Or talk with her. Maybe SHE is willing to watch the kids for minimum wage.

At least $10. per hour for the 10 yr. old and at least $12.50 per hour for the child and the toddler together.

She has to drive to your home each day.. No breaks for her throughout the day. .

YMCA can charge less, because you drop off your child, you provide your child's lunch.. . The sitter will be doing this each day at your home.. and cleaning it up.. As well as special tutoring.

There are more than one instructor per group at the YMCA and they have more children to watch (they can pay a fair wage and make a profit.).

If she were to work for a tutoring company, she would make a lot more than she will caring for your children.

I will be paying $50/day for 6 hours for 2 children this summer. The person watching them is a teacher's aide in his Pre-K program. There are two days when they will be 8 hour days, and those days we will be paying $75.00. Typically you pay more for in-home care than something like the YMCA (which was our other option), but I am also wanting my kiddos to be a little more structured.

Someone with a college degree as a babysitter and tutor, you're talking around $15/hour for two kids. She could make $10/hour at In N Out Burger so you'll need to outshine even fast food wages. You can't compare to YMCA or any other group rate.

As her employer, you'll need to talk to your CPA about handling the tax situation. It gets complicated when you have a nanny, unless you do things illegally.

IF you'd just put him in child care you wouldn't even pay $100 per week.

I just simply cannot imagine paying someone more than minimum wage. Why even work if you're going to do what some of these mom's have said is the right amount? GOOD LORD!

You just don't pay a babysitter for full time child care the hourly rate you guys are quoting! That's so absurd.

Pay her the same or less than the Y because he'd have a lot more fun with them. Kids want to play with kids, not do homework all summer.

Around here that level of care and instruction is going to cost at least $10/hour minimum. Probably $15. I would be clear with the instructor, however, that if you pay a full wage of $10 or $15/hour that you will need her W-9 information because you'll be reporting this on your taxes under child care credit, so she'll be responsible for reporting the income.

Sounds like the YMCA program is a great program. My advise? Unless your son has some serious ground to make up over the summer, he's not going to get ahead of his classmates that much with this extra instruction. Once he gets to 1st grade, his peers will quickly catch up. AND he'll be bored stiff in he meantime. The social interaction he'll have at the YMCA is just as important, if not more important, than getting a little head start on academics.

I'm all for academic enrichment over the summer (just ask my kids, they are both doing a language/grammer study and an algebra/pre-algebra study), but it's something we will work on in the evenings, 3-4 hours per week. We are only doing it as these are 2 areas they have struggled with this year and they are both entering new schools in the fall. New workloads, new levels of responsibility. If the can get ahead (or at least caught up) on these 2 topics then the transition will be all the easier.

My sister is a nanny and does just afterschool care (12.5hrs/wk) and gets paid $150/wk for watching 2 school aged children. Based on what she usually charges/gets paid she would advise $12/hour for 2 kids or well out a weekly rate that's approximate to that. It sounds like the woman your hiring has a well educated background and experience to handle all the work/watching/caretaking you've asked her to do and since this is a full time job she won't be able to go out and get another summer job which will make this her income for the summer. It seems a fair charge to me. I think it'll be cheaper to just pay her for both kids if she's up to the task of watching both and taking them to activities, it sounds like she is. Good luck to you!

I would guess she is expecting at least $15/ hour. Often you can find a summer day sitter for $10-$12 but I think you will need to pay extra for all the school work she will be doing with him. Most likely she will include the second child with this same rate.

My feeling on having a student teacher work with him over the summer is why would you do that to him. Is he so far behind? He will not get ahead with this. Let the poor kid enjoy his summer. Life is too short. He will be in school a long time. Two kids $15 an hour. One child $10 minimum.

at least $10 an hour for just 1 and probably up to $15 an hour for the 2. and be prepared she may not be open to carting a 17 month old to the pool etc. it may be cheaper for you to have 1 sitter for both kids. but she won't be able to do the same amount of teaching type stuff. And I agree with previous poster. why are you having him do "school" work all summer?

At least $15/hour for both kids... maybe even $20 since she has a teaching background. And don't assume there's much discount for only one child; it's the same amount of time for the student teacher after all - so not much discount if there's only one child. Personally, I choose to do summer camp for my six year old girls. They do academics all summer that camp is a fun time to unwind, and learn things like yoga, cooking, gardening, and hiking. We can also work on math and reading on weekends if need be.

Yeah I agree with the mom who suggested that closer to minimum wage is more acceptable because have you all calculated what $15/hr hour comes out to???? ABSURD for sure!!! 9hrs/day 4 days/wk would be $540 a WEEK!! I pay that for a whole month for one 3 yrs old. Find a home daycare where there are a few other kids and its usually between $100 and $150wk and then more depending on if you have her watch your other child as well. I would just talk to her and discuss what she thinks is fair compared to what you can affrord. If money is not a worry for you then go for it. Especially if she can provide the right tools to help him catch up academically. There probably isn't a price to put on the peace of mind knowing he is in good hands with someone who knows him well and is more than willing to work w/his dyslexia. Just talk to her about it. I have never paid a daycare provider by the hour. Its usually a flat weekly rate. Now babysitters we hire for weekend nights out w/my hubby is usually hourly. I pay $8/hr. if its night time and the kids are in bed most the time..and $10/hr if its more daytime. Sorry its just babysitting....its not a maid/nanny.
