I currently pay a wonderful woman who watches my 3 yr. old daughter $40/day in her home. We now have an 8 week old daughter that she is also watching. We both hate discussing money and she is flexible but is leaving what I pay up to ME, not her. To be fair...what should I be paying per day or per week for a toddler and an infant? Help! I drop the girls off at 8:15am and pick them up at 4pm Mon-Fri. We can't afford the high end, but I don't want to short-change her either because she is wonderful.

What can I do next?

To put in perspective, my kids attend a Kindercare Learning center. The daily rate for fulltime care for kids 3yrs+ is $46/day. An infant is close to $60/day. With more than one child, I get a 10% discount off the cheaper kid. So, you would be paying a bit over $500/week at a center. I am not sure what is fair for your provider. But, you really need to talk with her about it. I would think $50/day for the baby is a fair price. That puts you at $450/week for both kids, which saves you $57/week over my center.

When I had my kids in a home daycare, I paid $320 per week for both of them.

Hello. I also provide daycare in my home. When someone has a baby and I watch both kids, I charge double. It is not fair to the provider to make less for a sibling. Otherwise, she would be better off working for two seperate families!

I have been a family daycare provider for over 20 years. When I first started I gave the parents a 20% discount for siblings. I no longer give a discount for siblings. Times are hard for everyone and when I give a 20% discount for a sibling it is taking money away from my family and right now we cannot afford that. I have one daughter whose a senior at a private highschool and one in college so money is tight. If a family comes to me and needs help I will try to work out something. Take the time to really try to figure out what you can afford. Money is always a hard subject to discuss. I don't know if this helps but I know many daycare providers are charging $50.00 or more per day. Make sure she is happy with whatever amount you decide on. I hardly ever raise my rates because I hate talking about money. In the end though we are all trying to do the same thing and that is give our children a wonderful start in life. Best of Luck.
