Hi Mamas,

If you or a loved one you know hunts for deer, could you tell me how much it costs to have one processed? I am in the Arlington, TX area. If you're from the north, your deer are WAY bigger than ours, just FYI. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, mamas. Um... Tess... that was completely pointless. LOL As for PETA, I have no comment on that either. ;-) I wouldn't be mounting the head or anything. I'm in it strictly for the meat. Thanks for the help!

Seriously - the PETA comment? So no members of PETA eat meat?

Wish I knew the price. Husband cuts out the backstrap, makes those into nice little medallions/filets wrapped in bacon. The rest of the meat I cook in the crockpot with chicken broth and sometimes some bacon drippings to add some fat. With the crockpot meat, after it cooks all day it falls apart like pot roast. We make tacos, nachos, taquitos, enchiladas, soup, and stew with it. Sure sausage and ground meat would be nice, but our way is free.

You are looking in the neigbhorhood of $75-100 for processing. If you want them to make hamburger, sausages or other cuts, then that will be on a cost per pound basis ($1/lb up to about $10/lb).

My husband used to do it himself. But we just used the backstrap and the rest we bbq'd or used for tamales. I know alot of people that make their own sausage too. If you want hamburger or steaks then take in somewhere. Call around to see what is offered in your area.
Funny story, the first year we were together, my husband had a deer skin processed. He was so proud of it, my daughter was asleep when he brought it home. The next day I wasn't home when my daughter got home from kindergarten only my husband. He shows her the pelt and she screamed!! OMG Daddy you killed a deer, a real live deer, how could you! She proceeded to beg him to never ever ever hurt another live animal again. When I got home the deer skin was put away in the closet and she wasn't talking to him at all. He said by the time she was done he was almost ready to become a vegatarian and save the whales too!
Of course he kept hunting and she loved to eat what he would bring home.
Funny!!
Good luck!

It depends on a lot of things. My husband is from Pontiac Ill, it cost around 300 dollars to get a deer processed there. We live in St Louis and checked, around 600 to 1,000 dollars here. Oh this includes mounting the head, sorry, I knew that was important but spaced out.

If your deer are smaller than ours do you hunt dogs and not realize it? :p That was a joke but I didn't think our deer were that big.

My husband just shot a large 8 pointer in November during hunting season. It costs between $75-$100 to have it processed, it just depends what you want out of it and how you have it done.

We usually process our own. It's not that hard. I'm sure there is a youtube video or something. But, the cost probably depends on your location. Have you googled it? Or called around? That would probably get your best answer. I think it costs $100-200 here. I don't really know what it will cost in TX.

L. - I am in Mansfield so I know all about the deer here :) It cost us $80 for the standard cut (backstrap steaks, cutlets, and rest in hamburger meat). That is what we typically get. Some of the other cuts cost a little more (sausage, roasts, etc). My hubby also has them add just a little fat into it so it's not so dry to cook. He gets it processed at a place close to here. PM me if you want to know the name (I'll have to ask him - can't remember right now !) I am hoping he gets another deer this weekend. Love me some deer meat ! BTW - we have processed it ourselves. We get the backstrap and I take the rest of the meat to my mom's to use her meat grinder to make hamburger. I'd rather take it somewhere but this is free when we don't have the money.

We only have it processed into jerky or venison sticks (like slim jims) anymore. Hubby cuts off the backstrap and shoulder. The rest we run through my kitchenaid food grinder to make ground venison (mix it with a little 70/30 ground beef). Last full process we got was around $200 - this was for a Texas deer :)

Hubby has a PETA t-shirt:
People for Eating Tasty Animals. There is room on God's earth for all creatures, right next to the mashed potatoes.
