How Much Do You Pay Your Housekeeper?

I am just curious what people are paying their housekeepers. I had a housekeeper for a couple of years and all my friends told me that I paid her to much. I am looking for another housekeeper now and have talked to couple of people, however I think I might adjust the price. I have been paying $150 every 2 weeks. Here is a little bit about my house. I live in Allen in Twin Creeks, my house is a 2 story with 4 bedrooms, 41/2 baths and around 4700 square feet. If anyone has any suggestions and what I should offer based on experiences you have had please let me know. Thanks so much for your help!

Ladies I clean houses and apparently I do it a little cheaper than most. I am a stay at home mom ( I do not bring my kids) and I feel like sometimes we just need a break on the daily expenses of life.

I am independent.... I currently have houses that I do on weekly/biweekly schedules. So I have references if needed!!!

I will gladly quote each of you individually!! I will say that each house varies because the level of wekly dirt is always different depending on animals, children and time spent at home!

I do not generally do laundry, windows, ovens etc. However I will do those things if asked for them. I have a lady that I do LIGHT cleaning for while I do her laundry every week!

Anyway here are a couple of examples:
Laundry lady is 90 a week - she has children and alot of laundry!! I clean while I am there but it is light (like wipe counters etc and I usually do the toilets and vaccuum) just whatever I have time to do while the laundry goes!

I do a 4bed 2 1/2ba wkly for 70.I have done this house for over a year and it takes me about 3 hrs.

Those are just a couple....

I have SOme available space so please feel free to call or email me and I will gladly quote you over the phone or in person whichever you prefer.

THE FINE PRINT:
I do ask that homeowners supply cleaning products. Here is what I ask for:
Comet, windex, paper towels, toilet bowl cleaner, sponge, mopping solution and of course mop, broom, and vaccuum.

The first time is 20 an hour because that is when I do "Spring cleaning" type of stuff. Does not generally go over more than two to three hour normal time.

Obviously, I am not an expert. I can't keep one. I have offered $50.00 every two weeks. No changing sheets, no laundry. I do my own art room, guest bath and guest bedroom. That leaves Master Bath to clean. Master bedroom, clean mirrors, polish furniture and vaccum. Vaccum hall, D/R/ L/R, and den. Clean mirror in D/R and L/R. Polish furniture in L/R and den. Clean kitchen counters, never have dirty dishes to do and sweep and mop kitchen. Everyone here wants $25.00 an hour. I refuse to pay someone more an hour to clean my house than I make.

So you may be overpaying a bit. I live in Flower Mound and the Carrollton branch serves my area. They're phone # is 1-866-564-3361 and you can also go online to www.thecleaningauthority.com to get a free estimate. They base it on number of BR and baths, so yours should be less than mine. HI K.-
we had a housekeeper until last October and were paying her $100 every 2 weeks. She cleaned, and did all the laundry that I set out, put it away, and washed all the bedding. She was also very good about straightening the kids' bedrooms. These are things that you might be able to negotiate. We live in Rockwall, TX and have a 2 story 4 bed 3.5 bath 3700 sf house. I have heard that we could have been paying less, but haven't looked for anyone recently. The only reason we quit using her was to save a little money, and boy do I miss her! Also, I think there is alot to be said about someone reliable, trustworthy, etc. and would be willing to pay a little extra just for that peace of mind. Good luck!

We pay our (independent) housekeeper $65 per visit for every other week service. We have an 1800 square foot house (3/2), but she doesn't do much (except maybe vacuum) in our two guest rooms because we don't really use them much. She will change sheets & towels and wash them, but doesn't do any other laundry. We provide all the cleaning supplies (which is nice, because I get to have a say in what is used!).

You pay for what you get. If she is reliable, cleans to your expectations, doesn't steal, and seems to possess good morals, she's worth EVERY penny. It's very difficult now a days to truly trust who you bring into your home who will be touching your personal things. So much greed and fakes out there. Offering more than average will probably attract many. Weed them out carefully. Follow up with every reference and I'm sure you'll find the right fit. Good luck!

K., For the size of your house, it seems you were paying less than quite a few of us. I haven't had a housekeeper in 2 years, but for my 1800 3/2.5, I paid $20 ph, for 3 hours-- $60 a visit, so $120 every two weeks. Housekeepers face inflation, so I wold expect that price to have gone up.

I will say this-- June ###-###-####) did an AMAZING job. INCREDIBLE attention to detail. And, as in all things, you get what you pay for. (A great response to those who find it necessary to tell you they pay less. Smile, of course, as you say it. LOL)

I pay $125 for a 3100 sq ft house and I have a wonderful housekeeper I love that does an impecable job. I wouldn't trade her for the world. I had to use someone else when she was on maternity leave, and they did an awful job (I paid them $100), I was so glad when she came back. In the service industry you have to remember you get what you pay for. I've had friends that paid less and they were stolen from, eaten out of house and home, and also stood up when they needed them most.

Hi i clean houses and have quite a few clients, however when that price may seem high, it really isnt for that size home. I just bid a house for 140 that same size so that is only 10 dollars less, although i usually beat everyone elses price. That is a large home and takes a good amount of time to do a good job. Thumbs up to you for paying your housekeeper good money. You get what you pay for is my motto. I always tell my clients if your not satisfied i will redo it or you never have to call me back, I have never had that happen yet. So i think you were paying a fair price. Hope that helps.

I had her at my previous house in Plano that was 3,200 sf and only paid her $60. After a few months in the new house I increased her rate to $80 without her asking based on the increased size and the fact that she drives from Wylie.

The price that you have been paying is a very good deal-that is assuming that the person does a thorough job. You will not be able to find a good housekeeper for less than that. Anyone who says you are paying to much either has no idea what housekeepers cost these days or is totally jipping the person who cleans theirs.

$150 is about right for good service. If your maid does a good job and is trust worthy maybe you should talk to her about the price. But do consider does she put exta stuff like air freshener in each bathroom. Does she scrubbing bubbles gel toilet cleaners on your toilets? Does she do extras at no exta cost like washi g the dishes or organizing your pantry. A good house keeper is worth keeping and if they enjoy their job then they won't mind loweri g the price for you.

Well, if she is working dayly then its a steal. I lived in dallas before I moved to mckinney a few months ago and I paid $60.00 for an 1800 square foot house for one cleaning.

I have heard that that is cheap, so if you are paying $75 a week for that ginormous house you have then that is a great price. especially if she does a great job.

Even if you are paying 150 for one cleaning you really have a huge house so I would expect to pay that much for over 4000 square feet. I have a 3000 square foot house and I would expect to pay 75-100 for a good clean.

Hope that helps!

I clean houses for extra money while my son is in school. My rates vary based on how far I have to travel, how large the home is, how many hours I spend there, and the condition the home is in before it gets to a level I can maintain it and keep it nice while expecting the clients to clean up a little in between my visits. Some people live in filth and expect the cleaning lady to come in and wave a magic wand for a very low fee. It is true that you get what you pay for. I'm sure the other ladies on here who clean for money can relate to "horror stories" I have in my mind of people you couldn't pay me $200 week to go back and clean their messes up.

Depending on what you may want or need will give you an idea to adjust. Also you can call the maid services and see how much they charge as well. Seems $300.00 is a little much per month for cleaning. That seems like a daycare charge. But then you have a large home but again how much do you require to be done.

She is here for 8 hours, does whatever I tell her to do(refrigerator, stove, vents, walls, laundry, bathrooms, baseboards, entire kitchen, sheets...)and gets paid $72.00 per clean. She comes twice a week and so that means she gets paid $288.00 every two weeks. She is paid as an employee because we supply all her equipment, chemicals and she works on a time schedule. F.Y.I. My house is almost exactly the same size as yours. I use a locally owned service that our builder uses. He charges $120 every other week for my house. We have used him at that rate for almost 3 years. Most other estimates were higher, so I think you are close in what you pay.

This is confusing! I guess because I look at it more from the perspective of how many hours she is there rather than your square footage. For example, if you have parts of the house that are not used much, like guest rooms and guest bathrooms, that just requires a "surface clean" or a wipe-down, whereas your kids' bathroom requires much more time. I have a 4 bedroom, 2100 square foot home and my lady comes every other week for 2 hours. She is able to clean the kitchen, bathrooms, make beds, dust, vacuum and mop in 2 hours. No laundry. We pay her $20 an hour, or $40 for the visit. If you have a bigger mess one week and your lady has to stay longer to clean it up, it is only fair that you pay her for that extra time. Also, some cleaning people use your products while others bring in their own. My lady uses my products but if there is something special that she likes to use then she brings it.

As an independent housekeeper, I can tell you that you are getting a deal for a 2 story, 4 bedroom, 4.5 bath. I do not count square footage because it all depends on what you want done. For me and any other reputable independent, basic housekeeping is anything but basic. Everything from ceiling to floor is being done (accept windows for many of us- though basic window care would be included, such as finger prints and doggie slobber, just not full windows). That would include dusting of crown, ceiling fans, light fixtures, walls, picture frames, door and window casings, chair railing, baseboards, furniture care and floor care. Often baseboards need to be washed, not just dusted. You can also expect that your housekeeper is doing detailed and very laborious work, such as cleaning grout. Further, a reputable housekeeper is very aware of product uses and will never do something foolish like use citrus cleaners on granite or bleach on tinted grout. Most of us are very familiar with hard wood floor care and do it each and every time. This is a hard job and a reputable housekeeper who has to clean 4.5 baths and 4 beds is doing a serious amount of work. 150.00 seems fair however it could be more if you expect beds to be made, dishes and laundry to be done, if you have an abundance of nick knacks, etc... It could be less if you have no nick knacks to be dusted, no tile, you do not expect some of your rooms to be cleaned or you are happy with the barest minimum of work to be done.

I have had customers try to low ball me on prices, quoting things that are inaccurate such as stating that the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists housekeeper pay at 7.60 - 15.50 an hour. It is a bogus range for independent housekeepers. That is what a person who works for a house cleaning company might make, though you are paying much more to the large company than what they are paying their employees. That is what a housekeeper in a hotel might make. Independents have expenses. We supply materials, we have to pay for the gas to get us to and from, vehicle maintenance, self employment taxes and then taxes on top of that.

I charge a flat rate with a minimum of 75.00. I have to figure many things when I quote someone. All factors come down to time. If I can estimate that I will take 2 hours to clean your house, I will pass on the job unless you are willing to pay my minimum. If I estimate 3 hours, then it is 75.00. If I estimate 5 hours, I charge 125.00. When I do a one time, deep clean for a post rental, my fee is still based on me earning a ballpark of 25.00 per hour. A deep clean in an empty unit requires no furniture care. I have an empty place to work however I also am doing full windows and outer entry ways. Those are time consuming jobs. When I do total windows, which is common one to two times a year for my clients, I set up a day when I am not doing my regular job and I do windows inside and out.

I think your friends are incorrect when they say you pay too much. You get what you pay for. And when you pay too little, you are paying for inexperience and you will see it in the work. Also, there is no motivation to put blood, sweat and tears into a job that is not paying a fair wage.

Hi K.,
Is this an individual or a service? I think that affects the price somewhat. We are in Frisco, 4/2.5 with 3800 sq ft and pay around 140 after tax every other week. We just started with MaidPro and was please with the first visit. We had been using Molly Maids for about a year at 150 every other week and they did great for a while but the last few months the service was not as good so we switched. Just reading the responses, it sounds like Maggie H is getting a really great deal. I may check into that company too! :)

Pay what you think is fair and witin your budget. If it is more than your friends pay, who cares? Employees who are paid well for a job well done are more loyal and continue to do a good job.

You didn't say how many hours a day she is working. Where I live some of the housekeepers are getting $20+ an hour. My mother's housekeeper comes usually every three weeks for a day and she get $15 and hours, but elsewhere she get $20 an hour.

My house is only half yours with 2500 SF and I pay my housekeeper 70.00 per week so it looks to me like you are right in the ballpark. The biggest thing to me is that is you really like them and they do a good job then they are worth the money. I had one lady who I unfortunately lost not too long ago and she was so-o-o-o good. I feel like if I could get her back, I would pay her 100.00 per week! I think the trick is to find someone who does a good job, is honest, and shows up when they're suppose to. Those kind can almost name their price. If you like the one you have, KEEP HER and pay her accordingly.

Hi... My sister lives in Frisco, in the El Dorado neighborhood, and her house sounds to be about as big as yours. She got a group of ladies who came in and cleaned only the downstairs every 2 weeks for $70. I think what you're paying sounds fair.

I am in Allen also with 3500sqf and I pay 120.00 every 2 weeks so what you were paying should be about right. I have been using Rosa Cruz for a little while now and she is great! I do not have her number on me at the moment but I think she is in the Allen phone book.

Wow, I've read all the responses & they are all over the place. I haven't hired anyone here yet, but I've been interested in calling around. I moved from the San Francisco Bay area where I paid $15 per hour. Jane was there for 5 hours, so I paid around $85 per visit for my 2 story 2800 sq ft house. I supplied all my own cleaners. In California, things were much more expensive than here, so I'm surprised to see that house cleaning is more expensive here. It sound like many of the mamas have provided good referrals.
