How Much Do You Charge/pay for Babysitting?

My land lady just asked if I could babysit her 3.5yr old granddaughter for a day. Shes a very sweet little girl and she plays with my daughter almost daily. I would have her from7 or 8 in the morning til evening time. She asked how much I would charge but I have NO idea, I usually trade babysitting with friends but I can't think of anytime I would need her to babysit so trading is out. What do you think?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your input, I felt a lot better having an idea where to start deciding a price. Thanks!

I like the idea of bartering on rent. You could make it worth her while and say "$80 cash for the day, or $70 in barter on the rent." I know $80 might sound like a lot, but consider that you will have her child for at least 10 hours. (8 being the latest start and 5 being the earliest pickup--you said evening.) This would pan out to $8 an hour. I pay my babysitters about $10 an hour, so that's still less than the average here in Portland.

If you dont really need the cash, maybe she would be willing to give you a discount on your rent for the month? Doesn't have to be much either, but you could work out something you both feel is fair. Especially if her granddaughter is a good girl, plays well with your daughter and wont be much trouble.

Sorry, this is only for ONE day?
That's fine.
I misread your post at first.

Yes, hourly or a fixed flat rate.

ALSO ask her about food? Allergies? Who is supposed to supply the food? You or the Parent / Landlady???

Nap time?

In our area (for intermittent care) we normally pay either $50 a day, or $10 an hour, whichever is less. Plus expenses, arranged ahead of time. (aka, not walk home to a $20-$200 bill that wasn't discussed in advance)

The rule of thumb is $5 - $10 per hour per child. That said, you might charge more because she's staying all day and you'll have to feed her.
My daughter just babysat (a last minute thing) for 2 children for 3 hours - one is disabled, but not a problem at all - and got $60. They pay well and my daughter will babysit for them in a heartbeat. I'm sure that is why they pay her so well...

Love the idea of bartering for the rent. I take care of 2 kids aged 6 yr and 9 yr. I get $10 an hour. for the both or $8 an hour for 1 so I would not do it for less than that

My sitter charges me 5 an hour for both my kids and I have a 1.3 year old and a 3 month old. I love it. She's a great sitter and my kids love going over there.

When I was a graduate student, I charged 8 an hour for one child and 10 an hour for two children. I currently pay my babysitter 8-10 an hour (I pay her more for a late evening during the middle of the week because she usually has to be at work/school the next day and was rarely taking them until I agreed to up her rate. I also pay 10 for all last minute care that she takes. If it's a typical time though that's planned in advance, I pay her 8).
