How Many Hours of Sleep Does Your Toddler Get a Day?

My daughter is 2 1/2 she currently takes a 2 1/2 hour nap at school 12- 2:30. She's been going to bed at about 8-8:30 (whenever the battle ends) and waking between 5-6 am saying she's still sleepy. So that's about 12 1/2 hours of sleep. Is that enough at night if she wakes up sleepy still?what time does your toddler go to bed and wake up? And how many hours of sleep in a day do they get? TIA!

What can I do next?

my son sleeps about 11 hours at night and takes a 1.5-2 hour nap during the day. Its about the same amount of time as your daughter but he's not sleepy when he wakes up at 7:00. Do you think maybe trying to put her down earlier might help her feel more refreshed in the morning? Does she NEED to wake up that early (meaning are you waking her up to get ready for school) or does she naturally wake that early? If you need her to be up at that time, put her to bed earlier (like around 7-7:30). If she has the option to sleep later--make her stay in her bed quietly until everyone else in the house is ready to wake up. My son goes through these little phases where he decides he's going to wake up before the sun and EVERYONE else needs to be awake too--we simply refuse to go to him until 7 a.m. and keep him in his room, but after 3 or 4 days he starts sleeping until his normal time again instead of getting up expecting to play.

THANKFULLY neither of my boys ever gave me a fight about sleeping (I remember having wars with my mom around 4 years old, but I've been blessed). My 21 month old goes to bed 8-8:15 (occasionally to 8:30), and gets up around 6:30. He takes a 2 hour nap. My 4 year old goes to bed at 8:30-8:45 (VERY occasionally 9 but that needs to be something special), and he gets up at 6-6:30. He takes a 2-2.5 hour nap most times. (At home he takes naps. At his 3 day/week preschool, he may nap, but often doesn't sleep and just reads or lays there and rests...he does go to bed earlier those nights). I don't know what's "right" for this age, but that's what my boys do.

My 3 year old doesn't nap, but needs a SOLID 12-14 hours at night or she's a big grump. Bedtime for us is 7pm.

Your daughter's internal clock seems to be set and I'd bet that if you started bedtime an hour or 2 earlier she'd wake up a little more refreshed.

At that age mine took a two hour nap and slept about 13 hours a night, so total of 15 hours. 12.5 hours seems like not enough to me - is anything waking her up at 5-6 (too light, too loud outside)? The big sign to me is that she says she's sleepy in the morning. Maybe see if you can convince her to go back to sleep for an hour or two each morning. Plus, if nap is planned for 12:30 - 2 at school, she's probably not getting a full 2.5 hours of sleep by the time everyone quiets down.

The need for sleep varies. When mine napped at 2, she slept 12 hours at night and took about a 90 minute nap. Some kids need more than that.

Does she really nap, at school???
Is this per her, or per the Teacher?
I ask this because, my son is now in Kindergarten and they have a nap time. My son was saying that he was napping. Honestly, he thought he was. BUT... I asked the Teacher, and she said he does not... but is quiet and tries. But does not, fall asleep.
SO... I would really be sure, whether or not, your child 'is' napping. And for the entire time period.
Maybe that is why, she is so tired, still.

So, my son is tired when he comes home.
But now being in Kindergarten, his naps are not real regular after school, because he has homework and it is busy, after school.

But he is a napper. Always has been, until now. (my son is now 5).
He'd nap everyday for 2-3 hours. Go to bed at night by 8:00pm or so... and sleep for about 11 hours.

Prior to Kindergarten, and the now more hectic schedule... my son napped, every afternoon. And needed it.
He will also nap on weekends. He needs it.

I would say it doesn't sound like enough and would try putting her to bed earlier. When my daughter was that age, she took a 2-hour nap during the day, went to bed at 7:30 and woke up between 7:00-8:00. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but the earlier they go to bed (before they get over-tired), the more and the better they will sleep. Also, don't let her watch any TV right before bed. I hope that helps. You might just have one of those kids who doesn't sleep much, but I would really try putting her to bed earlier with a consistent bed-time routine.

My 2 1/2 year old get's about 1 1/2 hours in the day and sleeps from about 8-7:30. So that's about the same amount of time as your daughter, but my daughter doesn't wake up sleepy. When my daughter does wake up around 5, I tell her to go back to sleep. Lately, it's been working and she will go back to sleep for another hour or so.

My 2 1/2 year old is up 5 hours, naps 3, and then is up another 5 hours.. so typically for the summer we were up at 9 he went down by 1 got up at 4 and went back to bed at 9.. so all in all he sleeps 12 hours thru the nite and then another 2 1/2-3 thru the day.. I think it all depends on your child too and what activities they are doing. My daughter stopped naps before 3, but she wasn't quite as active as my boys, and she generally get's up earlier too.. but she's ok, no too whining or crabby..lol good luck :)

Mine got about 14

If he DIDN'T wake at about 1am to eat...He'd often wake at about 5am, eat (usually 16oz warm milk in a sippy) and go right back to sleep for another 3-4 hours. He only woke up because he was hungry, not because he was done sleeping.

At 2.5 he was also still taking 2 naps a day. Each for a little under 2 hours. Dropped the morning nap, and the afternoon nap hit 3 hours.

My 2.5 year old goes to bed around 8/8:30 and sleeps until 9:30/10, with a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon. I agree that if she's waking early and saying she's still sleepy, she might be waking due to outside factors. Blackout curtains to block the morning sun and maybe a white noise machine to block the sounds of alarms or others who have to get up early might help her sleep later and get the extra hours she needs. Good luck!

My daughter will be 3 in October and she sleeps 14-16 hours in a 24 hour period. Naps are 1:30-3:30 sometimes longer and bedtime is 7:30pm and she wakes up anywhere from 7-8am usually closer to 8am. Both my husband and I are big sleepers so I'm pretty thankful we have passed that along to our daughter. If your daughter is still sleepy when she wakes up what about moving back her bedtime to a bit earlier? Is this the time she wakes up normally or is the time your family gets up to start their day? Have you tried just telling her to go back to sleep? I've done this with mine when she on occassion has woken up early. I just tell her it's not time to get up yet and to go back to bed.

My 2 1/2 year old also gets anywhere from 1 1/2- 21/2 hours nap at school, average 2 hours depending if he sleeps the entire time. He goes to bed around 8:30pm and I get him up about 6:20-6:30am during the week, if he wakes on his own he is up by 7am. Even weekends (UGH). Unfortunately he is an early riser just like my 8 year old. So I guess on average about 11-12 hours per day.
