How Long Until We Can "Un-quarantine?"

My daughter contracted lice 2 weeks ago. She had about 10 nymphs on her head and about 12 eggs that we found in the days following treatment. We treated with Rid the first night and have never seen another live bug... But, just because I am SO paranoid I have treated her with other non-toxic options, a total of 6 now, including Fairy Tales Lice Mousse, Lice Free and Listerine. I have gone through her hair about 10 times at a rate of 1-2 hours each time, looking for eggs that were left behind. I found 7 eggs or casings the first day but the additional 5 eggs were found 1-2 every other day or so, which really freaked me out because with the way I have checked her hair almost daily (sectioned off, pulling about 20 strands at a time, looking at it from all angles) I have no idea how I missed them the previous day but Im only human I guess. Which is why I am still paranoid and wondering if, that could mean I am also missing live bugs in her hair if I somehow over looked a few eggs? I have sectioned her hair in 6 sections almost daily, looked through it wet and dry, used the terminator comb and conditioner, pulled the strands apart by hand to look at the hair and scalp etc. We still have not seen one live bug since day one (knock wood). I have also done the same with my other daughter and to a lesser extent my son (because he does not share a bedroom like they do and has not had any signs of anything since the beginning, BUT I have treated him 3 times just as a precaution, with the non toxic methods). So, now that we are on day 14 with no bugs and I have completely cleaned the environment daily (even though some say it is not necessary), are we in the clear? I have kept her away from other kids this whole time (we have gone places but she has not played with other kids one on one) and no I did not tell her I was doing it on purpose, we simply didn't go anywhere that we were invited with other people. I just want to be responsible about it and not expose anyone if there is any chance she could still have it. I see a lot of people saying "it came back" 2 and 3 weeks later and I am wondering why or how and how do I make sure that I do not make those mistakes in these crucial days?

What can I do next?

When they get sent home from school with lice, they are allowed back in once you can comb through and find nothing. So if you see nothing, they are clear to play with others. As for staving it off again, keep her hair in a ponytail (they love to nest at the nape of the neck if there is hair there), you can spritz her hair with any number of oils (we made a mix of rosemary, tea tree and peppermint, it was nice), and use a coconut oil shampoo. Basically, the lice need to stick the eggs the hair, if it's a little slick with oils then the eggs won't stick.

I consider your kids clean at this point. The only thing I might do is the things that you put in isolation (stuffed animals that couldn't be washed, etc), I would keep isolated for 2 more weeks -- eggs hatch in 10-14 days. It is extremely unlikely that if any hatched on a stuffed animal they could survive, but if they could survive long enough to lay more eggs, you would want another 2 weeks to make sure they didn't hatch. Live ones can't survive off a human head, so it's really unlikely that two generations of unsupported lice could survive, but those were the recommendations I read and how I handled it. I know how crazy it is -- we have had two infestations (a year apart) and they did not come back either time. The newest recommendations focus really just on the head and hair. They recommend that a good cleaning once or twice of the environment is sufficient. But you are in the clear. At the point -- I would check her once a week from now on -- that's what I do, just to make sure I catch it early if it ever happens again.
Good luck.
ETA: by the way, last year I spent $70 to get enough of the enormous ziploc bags with handles for both my kids' classrooms. They don't have lockers, they have rows of hooks, and another mom had done it two years before. The only times we had lice was when we didn't have those bags. The bags are big enough to accommodate kids book bags and coats and then the kids hang them on the hook -- the cloak room stays neater and there's no chance of lice transferring from one coat or bag to another. Each kid has a bag assigned with their name on it -- when they empty the bag at the end of the day, they put it on the back of their chair and it's waiting for them the next morning. Best $70 I ever spent, and I'll probably do it again this year.

WOW, poor mom. It is an awful thing to go through. I did many times years ago. I think you are clear now. From my recollection, the eggs hatch 7-10 days after being laid and bugs lay more eggs after 5 days of being born. SO, if you have not seen anything in 14 days, I think she is clean. If you are combing through her hair with a thin lice comb when doing it, and have not caught any bug, you are good. (FYI, when we did it, we first had a company out to do it. They put a lot of conditioner in the hair before combing, so it would be easy and slick going trough the hair, and then after each comb, they would wipe the comb on a white towel to see if anything is there). I think you are good though.

Your kids should be fine now. My son got lice last year and gave it to me (not my husband though!). They found it in school and he went back the next day. We cleaned the whole house twice and even gave the cats a bath. I'm still a little paranoid every time my head gets itchy but it's been fine.

We actually went to Hair Wizards in Encino. They have a non toxic treatment and they will check you for about $25. It's more if you actually have the lice and then you have to come back for follow up. They have treatments for furniture too. If you want to double check they can help.

Good luck.

Please understand that you are going to a lot of extremes here. It is good that you are checking them like you are. There was most likely a bug that was missed and it was laying eggs every couple of days that you were finding. The nits are easy to find and pull out. The bugs are sneaky devils.

Stop using all those products on your children. Most of them don't work anyway, they just pollute your children's body's.

I looked online for lice prevention ideas that are natural and the one I am doing when school starts is the water bottle one.

I already bought the water bottle and the Tea Tree Oil. The "recipe" is to put a few drops of the oil in the bottle then add water. Each morning you dampen their hair to style it. Put the girls hair in ponytails if possible to keep it from swinging around then just brush their hair and do the spray bottle every day.

They should never get lice again. They don't like the oil. It stinks and make the hair where they can't stick their eggs to the shaft.

Sounds like a win win situation to me.
