How Long Does Teething Usually Last?

My baby boy just turned 6 mos last week. About 2 wks ago, he started waking up a lot @ nite and not sleeping very well during the day either. He was also getting irritable & cranky and he's usually pretty happy most of the time. When he started drooling a lot more and rubbing his gums with his fists I assumed he was teething, but this started 2 wks ago and is still going on with no teeth appearing. How long does it usually last? I can see his gums on the bottom front are slightly swollen and there is white showing through the pink but the teeth just aren't cutting through. My SIL mentioned that this seems to be going on a little too long, so I was thinking maybe it isn't his teeth, but all the symptoms point towards it. I've been giving him Hyland's teething tablets except for when he really seems to be aggitated by the pain and then I'll give him Motrin, which is usually only at night when he seems to be in more pain for some reason. Has anyone else had teething episodes go on this long or could there be something else bothering him? Thanks ahead of time for everyone's time and help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for the replies, mamas. The day after I sent out this request, my little man's 1st tooth cut through. 2 days later, his 2nd tooth cut through. His crankiness has subsided, but he still gets a little pain. I've cut back on the Motrin and give him tablets whenever he starts rubbing his gums. Thanks again!

I think it depends on the tooth. With my boys Ive seen them cut in a couple of days on some teeth and then a couple of weeks with others. Hang in there. One thing that really helped was I got some of those netting things that hold fruit and put ice cubes in them. They could then suck on the ice cube.

hes just teething. my daughter takes a month to get her teeth in. i used the gentle naturals teething drops with her and they were a lifesaver. at night i would give her some tylenol and the teething drops. also give him cold teething rings (not frozen) or a cold damp wash rag. good luck this will stop just after his teeth break through.

Hello L..
My Baby boy is going through the same thing right now. For 2 weeks he has been fussy. he also is chewing on his fists and drooling a lot. He has even given himself some hickies on his wrist. He does not quite get the chewing/biting thing down; he is 3 months old.
His teeth are right under the gums. Just this morning we saw them very clearly. It has taken 2 weeks for the drooling to become excessive to now seeing 3 teeth. Hopefully it won't be much longer for your little guy. I have been told by some that it takes a few weeks and other that it only took a few days. I guess that all babies are different.
Good luck.

My baby started teething around 4 months and he just got his first two teeth about two weeks ago ( and he is 8 months)
so it took a long time for him.
At first i was giving him tylonol and teether tablets, but i dont recommend doing that because you dont want to be medicating your baby for months.
Good luck!

I have three kids and all I can tell you is that each one took their path with teething. The first two kids just GOT teeth, it was like they would wake up and there would be more teeth!! They started teething at four months and had a full set of choppers at their first B-Day party. Well baby #3 made up for the ease of the first two. On his first B-Day he only had the one bottom tooth and it took like months to get that one! He is now about 3 (sep 16) and finally got his last two year molars! So comfort him the best you can and use the frozen washcloth and binkies too if he takes one. Good luck and remember even after those first whites break thru the gums there are several more to follow! I know that the eye teeth and molars are the hardest, at least at my house they were.

Hi L.. Some babies just take a little longer than others to teethe and its completely fine. Just keep doing what you are doing. One thing my daughter LOVED was putting wash clothes in the freezer then having her bite on it til it wasnt cold anymore.
The pain will typically go away after the teeth break his gums. So once you see the tips of those pearly whites, the pain should subside. They tend to be a little more needy too when they teethe (thats how my daughter was). She is 9 months old and had 8 teeth by 7 months. She was getting 3 teeth at one time-it was hell. But she took it like a champ. Good luck!!
