How Long Does Postpartum Hair Loss Continue?

Hello - Recently I started shedding all that hair that doesn't fall out while you are pregnant (I am almost 5 months postpartum). Although this was my second pregnancy, I can't remember how long this should last - I am already getting sick of it though!

What can I do next?

Hi L., congradulations on the addition to the family. Not to worry, hair is always in 3 grouth stages, natural grouth, dormant, and falling out, this cycle is increased with the natural hormones your body now has. The 7 year cycle can also play a roll, generaly speaking 1 year for your body to get back to normal cycle, you could also be in the 7 yr cycle at the same time, increasing the hair loss. I would recomend scheduling hair cuts every 6 weeks and conditioning treatments to minimise the hair loss, & get you back on track, try not to worry about it to much, stress plays a factor as well. Remember normal hair loss, 150 hairs a day, respectivily you have 7 months to go. Mother of 4 daughters, grandmother of 2 boys, and one girl. Honor Grad. Cosmetoligist 20 yr. I think I lost hair for about a year after my son was born.

Hi L. - I didn't start the postpartum shed until 9 months and I noticed it tapering off at about 14 months. I don't know if 5 months is "normal" or not, but that was my experience. I have a LOT of hair anyway, so maybe that's why it took so long. :)

I believe I started "shedding" about 3.5-4 months postpartum, and it lasted for the good part of the year. I think I remember the summer after my daughter turned 1 (she's a May baby) that I was glad I had my hair back to normal. :-)

My hair was a mess for about a year, but I don't remember it starting right way, I think it started around 6-9 months aftr the baby was born. I had longer hair and didn't reallay go to a hairdresser for a long time, so when it stopped, I treated myself and got a new haircut/style!
