My daughter is ten and got her first period just recently. But she's had it for ten days. Is this typical? Does the first one usually last this long? It's not a lot, just spotting but still.

What can I do next?

I was 15 when I first got mine and I do not remember it being long or painful either, so I would get her in to see a GYN.

I think my first lasted 8 days, but you might want to check with her Dr. to see what they have to say.

EDIT to add- I was only 10 when I started as well.

Varies each person is different. I would see the gyny or just give a call to verify and confirm.

My daughter was 10.5 when she got her first...it was heavy and stayed that way for about 7 days then was light for another 3-4. She got the next one 23 days after the firt day of the first one (so about a 2 week gap then another one. It was the same way..and every 23-25 days there after with NO breaks. She is 16 now. Mine was never that way at that age. I got it at 11, a few months later again, and so on and by the time I was aobut 15 it was monthly, but lasted me about 3-4 days with one heavy day in there.

Since my dd's was so different than what I knew to be "normal" for me, and it was awful for her with it lasting so long and being so frequent (altho she rarely had any cramping) but did and doesn now, get headaches (we are a headache prone family of women..with a long history of migraines as well). So I took her in to get some checking done and questions asked. We decided to put her on birth control pills to attempt to regulate things. Every 23-25 days is just too frequent and 8-9 days too long and it was too heavy for a teen girl to deal with!

The pills help...things are more like 28 days and lasting more of a 5-6 days, and lighter...still heavier from what she describes then mine EVER was. Poor kid...I feel bad for her! But this is better at least.

You could call your Dr to ask advice....but there is a good chance they will say the same as ours did. Track it and wait it out, unless you notice other things like lethargy, paleness...otherthings to indicate she is suffering overall? Keep a calendar...track cramping, headaches, lethargy, heaviness (maybe if shes very communicative...otherwise keep count of her "products")....this tracking helped me "prove" to the Dr that my daughter was a good candidate for intervention. Its made her quality of life much improved.

Best to you and your daughter!

I also got my period when i was 10, I was home (alone) sick from school w/ Pneumonia and then started bleeding - I thought I was dieing !LOL I had terrible, painful cramps for months before it started. I'm pretty sure it lasted w/ a heavy flow for well over a week, then spotted for a week or so (seemed like it was never going to end). I would call her Dr. just to get a medical opinion. But I think its normal! Hope she's feeling ok

I started when I was 10 and they all lasted about that length of time. Make sure she is taking a vitamin with plenty of iron. I suffered from anemia for years because of my awful periods.

Yes that is normal, and it is even more normal to just have them speraticially for a while. Just make sure she has girly items with her at all times.

My 11 year old neice had the same problem... we actually took her to the ER one night because we couldn't get ahold of the doctor and she was bleeding very heavily... and since it was her first one, we didn't know what "normal" was for her... apparently it happens all the time... the GYN at th ER told us that it was normal for a range of bleeding, from spotting to heavy flow, and clots up to the size or grapes are normal. (I thought that was so strange, but she said they usually compare the clots to fruits, and anything around grape sized is normal)

She also said if the pain were to be intolerable, or the clots were getting larger, like plum sized (lol) that we should bring her back, but as of then everything looked okay, and to start her on a daily vitamin... not a gummy vite or a flintstones chewable, but to bump her up to a women's formula since her body would now need a little more supplement.

Good luck... and remember that you can listen to people online for advice, but when it comes down to it, we are not doctors, and if something seems really strange or aweful, go get it checked out!
