How Long Do You Ice a Boo-boo? :(

My newly-walking DD just faceplanted hardcore. Poor little girl. :'( She did cry right away, and we were able to calm her down. Her pupils are still evenly sized, and dilate normally, so I'm not worried about a concussion or anything like that. The problem is that she is starting to get a pretty gnarly lump. Not bad enough for a doctor's visit, but enough that it could use a little attention. I put an ice pack on it, but I'm not sure how long to keep her iced for. I know the rule for adults is 20 minutes on, 20 off, but I imagine that there is a difference for babies. She is perfectly happy and playing now, (scratch that, she just tripped over the dog... O_O *sigh* good thing Grandma is here to the rescue!!!) Anyway, how long should I ice her lump?

Lol Laurie, I had an issue for a while getting her to hold still too... I found that giving her some ice cubes in her mesh feeder so she could suck on them distracted her enough so she sat still and let me ice her. :)

What can I do next?

I'd say 5 or 10 minutes per session if you can get her to willingly sit for it. Make sure you take a picture for the photo album. I was just looking thru some old albums the other day and I have a whole section devoted to fat lips, black eyes, scrapes and bruises... it's funny to look at it now, but I sure hated it when it happened.
If she seems fine I wouldnt worry too much about icing it, it's not like a mandatory thing to do, so if she doesnt let you it's not anything to get overly concerned about. I'd use frozen peas and wrap the bag in a thin dish towel. The main thing you dont want to do is cause freezer burn to the skin, so just be logical about how long you hold it on there.

If you ice an area for more than 15-20 minutes it can have the opposite effect and actually "burn" your skin, I've seen it! To get them to sit still we bought the stuffed animal type ice packs and I usually hold them while we watch a show, sometimes I pretend to ice myself since they often want to do what we do :)

If you can get 5 minutes of ice time, that is about what you need for bump like you've described.

Poor baby! If you cannot get her to sit for the ice a friend told me this trick a long time ago and it actually works, She said put Vasaline on the area of her head that she hit. It stops the bruising. My friend did it on my daughter when she took a face plant into a toy key. It really works! I think the trick is to put in on immediately then try to get the ice on it. Just do not apply it to broken skin. I also learned about Arnica Gel. You can get it in a health food store. Again, I learned about it after another fall at a friends house. I just used it last night on my daughter who fell into a wooden toy golf club as she tripped over a golf ball! The club jabbed her in the tummy and there was a quarter size welt. I put the Arnica Gel onto it and you cannot even tell she had a boo boo.

I guess my kids fell in the right places to learn so much! LOL!

I hope she feels better!

Glad you asked this question. I was just wondering the same thing-- my DD hit her head on the tub. : ( My question is how in the world do you make them sit still while you hold the ice on the bump?
