How Long Do Gassy Foods Stay in Your System and Pass Through Your Breastmilk

I absolutely love broccoli, beans and other spicy foods, but am completely avoiding them, as they upset my babies' tummies. If I eat them....how long should I toss my milk afterward in order for it to not pass to my babies through nursing???

What can I do next?

This is weird but my lc told me that if I take beano when I eat these foods then they won't effect the babies tummy as much either. Weird huh? Maybe try it.

PLEASE DON'T DUMP YOUR MILK!!! Unless there is alcohol or drugs in your system, then by all means, dump it. But if gas is the only issue, then you're right in not giving it to your babies. However, you don't have to throw away that precious milk that your body worked so hard to make. Just store it in a breastmilk storage bag and keep it in the freezer (it can be stored for 3 months in a normal freezer in the very back, or it can be stored in a deep freezer for 6 months in the very bottom) and take it out to use when they start eating oatmeal or rice cereal. By that age, gas shouldn't be an issue.

Hi A.,

Congrats on the twins! :) I might want to check w/ a lactation specialist to be certain; but it generally takes about 24 hours to pass out of your milk. The babies may feel the effects much sooner, though...as soon as one hour after you eat.

I certainly wouldn't toss the milk, though. You can freeze it (3 mos in standard freezer and 6 mos in deep freezer) and give it to them later when their digestive systems are more developed.

You might want to try consuming a digestive enzyme (like "Omega Zyme" by "Garden of Life -- can get at local health food store). Check w/ your lactation specialist to ensure it's okay -- but I can't imagine why it wouldn't be, as it's just enzymes. This may help break down the food better.

Best of luck to you! :)

Warm Regards,

I think usually the milk is affected about 6-8 hours after you eat the food. My girls were lactose intolerant so if I had milk for breakfast they would feel it around the dinner time feeding. I think you would be good just to toss one round of milk 6 hours after you eat the stuff. Have you tried the boys nursing after you eat the stuff? I know it can be a risky idea.... but some babies aren't affected by stuff that you eat.... just depends on the baby. Blessings! I have a twin sister & know how special twins are!

It's really just the first three months that babies are really sensitive to the gas producing foods because the digestive system is still forming. They should be able to handle it more and more. You could get some gripe water that helps a lot for when they get gas. I agree with the other women, please don't dump your milk.

Modifying your diet when nursing infants is a good idea. You still need to make sure you are getting adequate nutrition - and your prenatal vitamins aren't it - especially if they are heat-pressed tablets. Avoiding foods from the cabbage family (including broccoli and cauliflower) is a good idea - but more importantly is whether YOU are digesting them or not. If you digest your food properly, and eliminate the waste effectively, you should have less "gas" in you - and your milk. If not, then it all goes through to the babies. I suggest looking into a digestive aid - like Digestazon Plus. You can find more info about it on my website: shootingstarherbs.amazonherb.net

Baby Acne is very typical. Just talk to your doctor about any recommended creams and don't worry.

I was told that you have to wait 24 hours to clear your milk. But I have noticed that so much has changed in the last 6 years. I would check with a lactation nurse to be sure.

Hi A.,

If you ate these foods during your pregnancy, you most certainly can and should continue to eat them. They are healthy and provide a lot of nutrients to you and your boys. YOU DO NOT NEED TO THROW AWAY YOUR BREAST MILK! ALL babies are gassy and they are learning how to use their bodies. It is important to eat foods in moderation, so balance eating high fiber vegetables with lower fiber vegetables. Your breast milk is constantly changing and the boys are getting to experience all the foods you are eating through your breast milk. Babies tend to have "fussy" periods usually late in the afternoon. Their fussiness is normal and usually not related to your diet.

Please call me if you have any further questions or would like to discuss this in more detail.

I don't think there is a set amount of time. I would still eat them, but in moderation. You can also give them Mylicon if you feel it is effecting them.

In about a month or so the gassy food will not affect their tummy's as much. I would not not toss out your precious milk!! Either skip the gassy food for just a bit longer or have just a little bit of these foods. You also have to remember babies guts right now are figuring things out, and just get gassy sometimes. If you are going to eat a lot of a particular food you know causes them issues, store your milk in the freezer so you can put it in their solid food in a couple months. I never noticed a difference in my sons tummy troubles when I stopped the broccoli, so I just ate it anyway, and now he likes to eat it himself. Good Luck.
