How Does GT Work?

My daughter is 10 and in GT at school. I think the program is great and love her teacher. However, the class is a 45 minute pull out class. In all the time she's been in GT, I never thought about the grades for the class she is missing for GT. Last year she missed science but it was never that big of an issue she did great! This year, however, she misses math class. Math is her weak subject. She makes B's usually and I'm fine with that. The problem is that she was upset the other day because her teacher pulled her aside and told her that she wasn't doing so well in math and that she needs to work harder and bring up her grade. I'm always checking the online grade book and there is no grades in the gradebood except her music grade. I haven't been notified by the teacher that there is a problem and I haven't recieved any e-mails from the gradebook of a grade below 70. I don't understand. Now, i'm curious if they have to makeup the work they miss or how they recieve grades for that class. I am planning on talking with the teacher to see what is going on. Do any of you great mommas know how this works? It doesn't bother me that she be pulled from class because she can keep up just fine I just want to understand the grading on the class she is pulled out of. Again, it hasn't been any problem in the past. If there is any problems I think that it is just because she gets in a hurry because that is a problem that we have already had to talk about in the past as well. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Talk with the school. Here the kids are usually pulled during specials so they don't miss their main subjects. If that is not possible, I imagine they may be able to adjust something, different group, etc. so that she doesn't miss math.

I think you're going to have to get with the teacher on this because it seems different schools handle the gifted and talented programs differently.

At my daughter's elementary school, if the student was in the GT program, they had advanced work in the classroom that was administered by their regular teacher and they also spent one or two afternoons a week, depending on their grade, with the GT specialist in a different classroom. I remember my daughter would say one of the best things about going to her GT class was she got to miss math (her least favorite subject). She had A's on her report card all year so I don't know if they weren't responsible for completing their "regular" math assignment and did math in GT instead on those days, or if she was just able to keep up. Since she never had any problem with it, I never had reason to clarify. She's in middle school now and they handle GT students in a totally different way there as well.

Again, this is probably best answered by your child's teachers since it seems GT programs are different in each school.

Blessings,
N.

Hmm, the only way to know is to speak with the teacher.. Pulling her out of math does not make sense unless they are pulling her out of "regular math" and teaching a more advanced math for the GT students. ..

At our daughters elementary school EVERY classroom teacher teaches GT so every child on campus is always being taught GT for all subjects all of the time. ..

At our elementary school the GT students are pulled from class twice per week during non- core classes (no reading or math).
