No boomboxes, technology and all that, nothing has to be that big. They make small Bluetooth speakers that sync with iPods, iPads, or MP3 players
I used to have CDs when I was young and had a blast playing them on my portable boombox. I'd like to get some music for my 7 year old but are CD boomboxes even around anymore LOL. He obviously is too young for a smartphone and I'd like it to be simple enough that he can set it up on his own. Any suggestions?
Matina - yes, that's the thing - I don't want to have to worry about doing any of that stuff and my son is too young to load the songs onto the ipod. Plus my daughter is a NB and I want her to grow into it too. I guess I will just get a CD player. Thanks!

My kids at that age listened to music on their ipods - you can get headphones, and we have bluetooth speakers - they are just little. You can buy very inexpensive ones. We also have this big speaker that blasts it - they use it for parties, etc.
One of mine used my old ipod shuffle.
My son listens to a lot of music on the laptop and iPad. He also likes to use my old iPod. He has a lot of YouTube artists he likes...he has good taste introduces me to some good music I never would have heard of! The year he started middle school and he was given my old phone, so now he has a ton of music on that. There are many small music players like an iPod...they are easy to use.
Turn tables are making a come back.
I've seen them in some stores but you'll need records.
You can still get CD players.

I'd be very careful about anything where ear buds/headphones have to be used.
Kids play music too loud directly into their ears and permanently damage their hearing.
By high school they are well on their way to needing hearing aids.
Bluetooth speakers will work with just about anything...get an iPod and go that route.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "set it up on his own". I'm sure you could find a CD player and some CDs, but in terms of what might be a better use of your money (something he would be very likely to continue to use over the next few years), rather than something that might become extra clutter in your house, maybe think about getting him started on digital music. Something like, buying an iPod and loading it with songs you think he would enjoy...and then in a few years you can teach him how to download other songs (can buy him gift cards for that).
As others have said, you can get him a speaker for that device, there is no requirement to use headphones.
Another vote for an iPod. They're pretty cheap used, or you can buy a cheap used iPhone and not put any service on it and disable the WiFi other than when you're downloading music. We have an old iPod that has hundreds of songs on it already that my boys listen to and they dock it in a set of speakers that has an alarm clock built in. If they get tired of that music, they pull up music on YouTube on the desktop computer that they share or through the PS4 hooked into the TV.
We do have some CDs but listen to them in the car.
My kids use their iPod touches. I actually have CDs (some specifically kids music, some my music that I think is kid appropriate), and I copy the music over from the CDs using iTunes. I also set up the KidzBop and Disney music stations on their iPods through Pandora.
They either use the speaker on the iPod touch, or they connect to a bluetooth speaker we have in our house.
Walmart does sell them..and I prefer my kids have that than the others.. they keep it in their bedrooms and only play the cds we bought or books on cd we borrowed from the library. ..at age 7 I just wanted to know what they were listening to and not have them walking around all day with it.

My kids downloaded music onto iPods or watched youtube videos, before they got their iPods they had MP3 players.
ETA: I doubt a 7 year old is too young to load songs onto an ipod. I need a 7 year old to show me how to load songs onto an ipod!
Our grandkids still have a boom box. You can buy a CD player with a radio at local stores like Walmart.
My kids use our old iPod touches (the ones we had pre-smartphone). You can buy cheap speakers for them. At one time I had a "boombox" that played CDs and had a place to plug in your iPod so you could listen to it without earbuds.
Here is what I did: I bought my then 6 year old a small CD player, with radio too, from Amazon UK LOL! I got it in pink, and we use batteries for it, and it was a better value for money compared to stuff on Amazon US. And, I got her a CD with classical music to go with it. She loves it! I considered an iPOD but then you would have to put the music in for her no?
My daughter got a Pirates of the Caribbean CD player for her bedroom so she listens to CDs. She also has had a Leap Pad for the last few years that she listens to music on as well, but I generally don't let her take it to school. She has asked for a phone but at 6 years old she is far too young in my book.
My son used a cheap little CD boombox as a real little guy and the graduated to a Lego mp 3, and then an iPod. He sill likes the radio on his clock, too!
My daughter listens most often on an ipad via her dads itunes account.
