Mamazita and I are on the same wavelength. I hold the tissue for DD and tell her to pretend to blow out a candle with just her nose. Had to teach her to close her mouth, though.
Hi all,
I have an almost 3 yr old son whom has the typical cold going around right now and along with it comes a very stuffy/runny nose. Not too uncommon for him. My question is, how did you teach your little one(s) to blow their nose? I have tried and tried different ideas, to no avail, he just doesn't get what I want him to do.
On the bright side, he now knows how to blow bubbles under the water wtih his mouth...we're almost there!
Thanks for the advise!

I have the same issue. My almost 4 year old (in April) is sick and cant blow his nose! Its so frustrating. I cant remember when my 6 year old started, but it had to be around 3-4, so hopefully soon he will get it. Keep trying and one day it will happen. Probably more around 4 or so. And my 3 yo wont let me use the nose suction on him either!! Good luck.
oh my gosh, I am going to have to track your question. My son is 4 and still does not blow his nose! Good luck!
My son just imitated me and blows his nose like a pro. He's only 20 months old, so I guess I should consider myself lucky!!
There is a great episode of special agent Oso, which teaches kids to blow their nose
W/my 3 yr old, I just hold a tissue to his nose, plugging only one nostril.
Then I tell him to breathe out "JUST his nose keeping your mouth closed".
It was a trial & error but he eventually got it.
Does he love it? No but he likes that he can breathe afterwards.
Sometimes it doesn't work well enough & we have to try a few times but
I keep trying throughout the day.
I try not to do it so much he's turned off by it.
Sometimes he just isn't into it, is uncomfortable & I leave him be :(
I can't believe no one has suggested this yet:
teach him how to blow out a candle with his nose!!!
My daughter is 5 and I still use the suction on her, she barely blows the boogies out. I can't stand to hear her breathing it in on purpose.
Hold the tissue on his nose and tell him to breathe out his nose strongly. He will figure it out in time. He may blow boogie bubbles out of his nose, LOL.
My oldest just turned 4, and we worked on this a few months ago. Basically we had him take a tissue, cover his nose, and I'd say "pinch and blow". We'd keep repeating that - "pinch and blow". It started out with him mostly making the nose-blowing noise with his mouth, but after we kept at it, he started really blowing his nose. Guess it just took a little practice, but now he's a pro!
I actually played a game with my kids when they were healthy to help them figure it out. We'd hold a tissue hanging down from our nose and see who could make it move the most by breathing hard out of our nose. Then change it up a bit from blowing out of both nostrils to just the right or just the left. Since its a game and they want to win (and they feel good/healthy, not sick/miserable) they caught on fast!
Doesn't mean they still don't sniff it all in waaayyy more than I'd like, but they at least know how to blow their nose!
