How Do You Store and Organize LEGOS?!

My son loves legos. We have a ton, including the hundreds my husband saved from his childhood! What is a good way to organize and store legos? I would just store them all in one big bin, but we are constantly looking for that one piece, or trying to put together one of his sets.

Does anybody have a good system?

We have a giant bin, but those plastic drawer things may be what your looking for. With all the back to school stuff on sale now, you may be able to pick one or two up at a good price.

We only have the chunky blocks, but we use a bag that one of the kid's sleeping bags came in. It sinches up good and is easily portable.

I hate to say this...but don't even bother trying. I used to try with my son, and it just got to be too crazy! Kids don't mind spending the time looking for that special piece. As long as all of the legos are in one bin, or a few bins with nothing else in them, I think that might be as good as you'll get.

I used to be a fanatic about this. I had clear shoeboxes and in the box would be the instructions and the legos. So the kits were together.

That did not last as long as I would have liked. Now we have a few big bins and 1 HUGE bin. The boys are fine with digging around for a lego. I've had legos in my house now for about 13 years and I swear they multiply overnight!

If you are still set-oriented, you could try and plastic shoebox. It worked really well until my kids started building stuff other than the sets.

What works for my boys:

I bought them each a rubbermaid cart (on wheels) with three drawers. Honestly, I don't care how they sort them in there:-) But I know one drawer is their "Technics" and the other two are traditional legos. The cart is nice because they can wheel it from room to room to play then put it all away and wheel it back to their room. They've even wheeled them out onto the driveway to play. They can also put their "Masterpieces" on top of the cart to display or while they're completing them...

My sister in law has those clear plastic drawers and they're organized by color and size. My guess is she has hundreds of thousands of pieces - no joke.

Honestly, I have gotten to the point that I am just glad if they are off the floor. One thing we have continued is keeping the really small pieces in a shoe box versus stuck in with all the regular blocks. A former friend-too fanatical about things-would spend at least a couple hours a day sorting through the Legos and other small things. She had the legos by size and color and kits. She also got really upset with the kids if they were not sorted correctly.
