R.L.
I'm with you. I can't seem to get myself going today. I just posted a jff question to give myself an excuse to stay seated on my comfy couch and read answers. :)
I've been sitting here too much, this afternoon, surfing Mamapedia and FB.
I'm tired and procrastinating on chores. My suitcase still needs to be unpacked, there is still laundry to be finished, and my kids have not finished their homeschooling year yet (we're close though)
How do you snap out of an unproductive spell? I keep trying to set my timer and get chores done, but I get right back to doing nothing soon thereafter. I also notice that I get worse with this when my cycle gets near.
Any suggestions or fellow commiserations?
It's 5:00 somewhere, right? :P
Great suggestions ladies, and it's good to know I'm not alone!

I sit down and chill for a few minutes and think about being one of those lazy/crazy people that are on "Hoarders" and my butt gets moving!
Sometimes you have to allow yourself a day off. There is so much hustle and bustle that I know I get worn out. So give yourself permission to let go for an acceptable to you time limit. No guilt allowed. Then tackle one project even if it's small. I find that all it takes to get over the hump sometimes is begin! That feeling of accomplishment is enough to motivate the next action. If you're not feeling it yet then maybe get some help. Get the kids to help, put on some music and set your expectations realistically. I can really freak myself out when I try to do a week's worth of action in one day.
Love the question because this is exactly how I've been today! Unfortunately, I don't have any great suggestions for you. I have heard that putting on upbeat music and dancing around helps get you in gear, but I haven't tried it myself.
I was like that monday and tuesday at work - paying for it now, btw.
don't know what happened other than got some good sleep (as in more than 5 hours) and an extra diet DP - LOL!
Caffeine - never fails me.
Upbeat music
Think of the free time you will have this weekend with your family/husband if you get the stuff done today.
Never fails--I make a list & LOVE checking items off!
It is 5 pm somewhere. I'm not sure I want to be there.
I'm slightly procrastinating right now. I just officially closed my in-home preschool a couple days ago and now need to rearrange our living room. I love that we have it back again and I can't wait to go couch shopping when we've got the money. I have dishes to do, and a woven structure in the backyard to tear down and rebuild for summer in our own new ideal shape and a put-together canopy that needs to go over the sandbox for shade. Plants to water, groceries to shop for.... lots of projects whispering at me...
My usual MO is to make a cup of tea and write down all the things that need doing, then decide what sort of 'bite-sized chunks' I want to do them in. And cut yourself some slack...if it's hormonal, well, sometimes we do just need to turn our brains off for a little bit!:)
Pick myself up and do it.
TV. computers off. a cup of coffee. watch an episode of "Hoarding ; burried alive" gets me cleaning in a snap! Or just start somewhere, with one room and get one room done without thinking about what is left to do.
Ha ha post below mine had the same reaction to "Hording" show. I didn't read it before I wrote mine. Speaking of which, I need to get my butt off this computer too. Sooo much to do.
Well I had been feeling the same way for 2 days. Very out of the ordinary for me. I think I am out of sorts with the kids out of school....no schedule. I hadn't worked out in 4 days either, also very unlike me. So today I woke the kids up early and headed to the Y. I went to a Turbo Kick class and now I have tons of energy. I always feel so much better when I work out. I do think its okay to give yourself permission to be a bit lazy now and then, but I know after a bit it can drive me crazy, I crave routine and organization.
Sometimes having a day on the couch watching TV isn't so bad. But when you need to get stuff done make a list. Next go through the program guide for what's on later. Tell yourself that you can watch that show uninterupted with a snack and your favorite beverage IF you get 2-3 things done on your list.
All of these:
Caffeine
Music
Hoarders tv show
Inviting someone over
Showering and getting dressed
Telling myself I only have to work for 20 minutes, then I get a break.
Yes it is, but at least wait until 3, lol...You'll snap out of it, I go through it often enough...The monotony of kids, chores blah blah gets to ya, or at least it does me...You need to go and find some fun and if that's not in the works any time soon then you'll snap out of it till next time, cause you'll get sick of yourself..Good luck! Mine too gets worse close to my period...
Why can't you just chill? Are you on a schedule?
I have and am so with you. I homeschool my children, and last October I was in a car accident. This slowed me down with dr. appointments and such. May was the worst month ever for me in a long time. My kids are 14 and 11, so I put a lot of responsibility on them by saying, "If we don't get it done it May, we have to keep going, even though your friends are out of school, until you get it done." They rose to the task and finished their school by the end of May! This was my motivation to get some things done. We moved and the end of April so I have a LOT to get done. But for me it was, "Why am I so unproductive?" I have been going to a counselor to help me work out some things in my life. Not life shattering, but life understanding. It has been worth the extra appointment (and trust it me, it was extra as I was already in the dr.'s office or such 4 times a week!). This may only be a one time thing for you, but I figured it would share just in case it wasn't. My June has been so much better than May, and I look forward to July :) as I am finally more productive one day at a time. Good Luck!
my mom used to put on oldies when it was time to do chores. we would all sing along in the different parts of the house while we worked!
to this day, i get the urge to scrub the sink when i hear oldies music!
is there some tradition your parents did that helped chore time go faster?
Not sure the surfing is helping you. Is there something you would actually like to do? I find I put off the ugly stuff with the computer, but what I really want to do is write, sew, paint, or play piano. If I give myself permission to do one of these things, then I'm far more motivated to do the "have-to's"...
What do you LOVE doing? Is there some way you could fit it in, so that you feel you have more than tasks ahead of you?
Not sure that will help, but I hope you find the solution!
