J.K.
If you're using Medela, then the membrane is working as long as you have a good suction. If you don't have a good suction, the membrane may be loose.
I am pumping and just watching videos on how to use it and wondering how much the membrane is suppose to move?..

On a Medela, the membrane should flap with each pump allowing the milk to drop into the collection bottle. It the membrane is not working properly or torn, you will not get strong suction and won't pump very much milk.
The membraine is the white piece on the yellow thingy, lol. The white peice moves as it is suctioning. If you are not getting a good suction, press it in and see if that is the problem.
I always just went by how effective the pump was working, and how much suction it produced. I never really paid too close of attention to how much it actually moved, but I don't think it did much at all.
If, after letdown, your milk isn't shooting out when the pump is on, I might try readjusting it and trying again.
It doesn't move a lot.
I could tell when one of my membranes was bad, because it wouldn't lie totally flat against the plastic part when the pump is off, or because it has a slight tear.
If you don't see these things - it lies totally flat and it's not damaged to the eye, then it's fine.
(Disclaimer - my experience is with Medela, I don't know about other pumps)
what pump are you using?
It's been 10 years since I've pumped. I had the Medela Pump In Style - the white membrane would push up when the milk came out. It was on the yellow valve - I think that's what it was called - it's been that long.
I don't have my breast pump anymore either - so I can't look at it and remember!!
